Description Jeane 2012-09-14 23:55:22 UTC
I have a Windows7 installation with OO 3.4.1. I recently installed 3.4.1 and I am not sure which exact version I upgraded from. It was 3.something.

I've done the most "recreation" with Word and Calc.

If I open either program with a document, walk away and do nothing, the program will close itself and show the screen explaining the document I was working on (in this case untitled.whatever) will be recovered the next time I launch the application. The system will stay hung up on this screen and it will never close. It becomes unresponsive to any closing options and I must cancel it through Task Manager.

If I open either program and try to un-check the Automatically Check for Updates option in Tools/Options, and then immediately close the application -- it looks like everything was successful, but 30 seconds later the previously described screen pops up and -- read the rest of previous paragraph. Then, if I immediately re-open the program again and check the Automatic Update check box -- it is reset as selected and didn't save my change to un-select it.

If I open either program with a document and look around or make small changes, it will crash and go through the same process as above. However, the crash seems more time based than action based as it doesn't seem to matter what I am doing with the file -- editing an existing one or opening/closing a new one.

I have tried resetting the User Profile several times by backing up the User directory (renaming it User-bak) and then rebooted and tried again -- at least 6 times. The same problem occurs over and over again.

I am in the process of downloading 003.3 to see if that fixes the problem as I need to get some work done. If you need any more details (or for me to continue recreating the problem, please let me know and I will re-install 3.4.1.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, I experience a similar kind of error. I am using winXPSP3 and OO 3.4.1; when trying to open any file with the OO-extension, nine out of ten times the file will not open. The program files soffice.bin and soffice.exe are mentioned in the task manager though, but the file itself doesn't open at all and the system freezes, unless I close the above two files mentioned by means of the task manager. I have not yet been able to install OO 3.4.1. in win7 at this time, due to another bug, so I don't know if it will work there or not.

Same problem, the document will be usable for a max of 30 seconds and then crashes, and when recovered, same happens again.

Please read the Release Notes: http://www.openoffice.org/development/releases/3.4.1.html#AOO3.4.1ReleaseNotes-KnownIssues

Apache OpenOffice 3.4.0 and 3.4.1 manage the user profile differently than previous versions. The old user profile is automatically converted so that users can keep their extensions and settings. In a minority of cases, especially with highly customized profiles (many extensions or customizations) the conversion doesn't succeed. Common symptoms are: frequent application crashes, problems with dictionaries or thesaurus, OpenOffice starting and crashing after a few seconds. To solve this, just reset/rename your user profile as explained in the official OpenOffice forum. http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12426

Attention: Hagar

These crashes seem to have gone away once, but now will not allow me to do anything useful with Open office! There are several old profiles in the attachment as well as the current one. All are equally worthless!

Also Win7 and having this issue. I've completely uninstalled and removed all User information to make it create from scratch. After the crash, I'm unable to "OK" the Document Recovery window and have to force a close. I've disabled my anti-virus program, as I had had an issue with that causing problems a few upgrades back, but this issue still occurred.

After doing this & rebooting, I'm now able to work in AOO without a crash at least for the last 10 minutes ;)
