file used to do WebQueery perfectly in earlier version, now NOTHING

WebQuery: Loading table from Internet gets error: URL [see below] works fine in Firefox, OO file worked perfectly in previous version [3.3??] and File is attached, now I updated to your latest 3.4.1 and get "server Error" Right after "Insert Link to External Data", pasted this link to URL box, push Return and get an error. [I'm after “main_Table” in Available Tables window.]

Document that used to work just fine in previous version has the data, now upon opening and clicking Update [this file contains link to external data?] it gives error AND erases everything ["The link could not be updated."]. Also Refresh every 60 seconds worked, now it stopped.

Here is the link - below. Document enclosed - email me if you have questions - thanks!! [login email denver80218us@yahoo.com or alexander1us@msn.com] but I think I covered it all in detail. Worked, now in 3.4.1 does NOT. I tried a blank New Spreadsheet but no result either. You can test it in your older version. [How can I get older version to get it working till it's fixed and resolved??]

File enclosed: webqueryError
[A6 is the cell where i load data] saved as .XLS if that makes any difference? I tried blank sheet and it still gives same error.

Comment 1 Alexander 2012-09-20 03:16:28 UTC
Want to add that "Insert Link to External Data" worked minutes before OO update to 3.4.1, file enclosed is from 2 days ago = everything is current, current data in spreadsheet.

BTW, is there any way to delete my 2 email addresses from my initial submission? [don't want to get spammed] - thanks!!
Comment 2 Alexander 2012-09-20 03:49:49 UTC
Likewise Edit -> Links... Update nor Modify buttons don't work.
Comment 3 Alexander 2012-09-20 17:05:59 UTC
Even stripped down version of URL gives error [now little progress - it may work sometimes, but not ALL, mostly NOT: [And my Windows XP is updated to the latest - ran update last couple weeks or so when provided by MS]

this one is the *simplest* of all - *never works*, yet in ANY browser [IE, Firefox] works fine [till Jan '13]:

Second error in Calc

Despite of the first error, the application allows selecting import options (like locale).

Confirmed on Linux

Regression from OOo 3.4 Beta
may be introduced while removing neon, see bug 118569
Comment 10 jsc 2012-10-12 12:20:30 UTC
I downloaded the webqueryError.xls and load it. I got asked that the file contains links to other files and if I want update them. Clicking ok triggered an update and the document got updated. I can't reproduce the problem withe this document on MacOS and AOO 3.4.1

Attachment 79577 [details] works for me too, but please try with URLs in comment 4 and comment 6
Both work in OOo 3.4.0 BETA OOO340m0 9583, and don't work with AOO.
Comment 13 jsc 2012-10-12 15:17:09 UTC
The second Url in comment 4 works for me as well, the first Url only once and the Url from comment 6 doesn't work for me.

Seems to be not stable or a general problem. Further investigation necessary.
Comment 14 Alexander 2012-10-12 16:48:58 UTC
Thanks for testing it guys... [yes sometimes some URLs work] BUT overall most URL don't work ALL the time, or consistently... pointing to some BUG. Problem that needs to be resolved so it works 100% - as it used to work in previous versionS. Noticed a Mac may work "better"? :)

I'm just a regular user... how do I install this serf thing on my Windows XP Home, latest version??? You say "Works after updating serf to 1.2.0"

I downloaded "serf" and it has a bunch of files, no installer, opened Readme and have no idea what it is and what to do with it??:
--------
Welcome to serf, a high-performance asynchronous HTTP client library.

The serf library is a C-based HTTP client library built upon the Apache
Portable Runtime (APR) library. It multiplexes connections, running the
read/write communication asynchronously. Memory copies and transformations are
kept to a minimum to provide high performance operation.

----

Quick guide for the impatient

  (Unix)
  % ./configure
  % make
  % make install

----

Building serf from a Subversion checkout (non-packaged releases)

We suggest that you try out 'serfmake'.

 % ./serfmake --prefix=/usr/local/serf --with-apr=/usr/local/apr install

If you want to use the autoconf build system and are using a Subversion
checkout, you need to run buildconf and have APR and APR-util sources handy.

 % ./buildconf --with-apr=/path/to/apr --with-apr-util=/path/to/apr-util
(By default, buildconf will look in . and ../ for apr and apr-util.)

Then, you can use ./configure, make, etc.

-------------------------------

Thanks guys for fixing it. Just what to do with it??????

This was to register that updating our version of serf solves the bug. I didn't mean you download and install serf (something impossible for a regular user, as you have to build it from source).

> Thanks guys for fixing it. Just what to do with it??????

Unfortunately, OpenOffice does not provide partial updates for important fixes.
So you have to wait until the next release.

If this issue is a blocker for you, and you are adventurous, you could try a build from the nightly build bot (if you are interested, I pass you the link). If that build solves the bug, you could try copying the serf libraries from this build into the installation folder of OpenOffice 3.4 (if you are interested, I tell which libraries to copy, and where to copy them).

Disclaimer: I'm not suggesting you to do so ;) (even if you are adventurous, the build from the build bot will replace previous versions of OO, so this should be tried in a virtual machine).
Comment 22 Ariel Constenla-Haile 2013-03-26 00:42:22 UTC
Fixed on trunk.

@Alexander: the next release will be OpenOffice 4.0, there is no final release date yet; it might be in the middle of 2013

In these times of cloud storage and web connectivity, this bug might be a blocker for several users; it might make sense to think about a bug fix release. This kind of discussions happen on the development mailing list, anyone interested can post a mail bringing this topic.
