Description Peter Smith 2013-02-21 10:08:41 UTC
I typed a French word in Write which was (correctly) reported as mis-spelt (ie underlined in red). I right clicked and got the options 'Set Language for Selection' and 'Set Language for Paragraph'. In both cases I got the options English (UK), English (USA), German (Germany), None, Reset to Default, More.

I expected that 'More' would return other language options. Instead it returned Character formatting options (but sadly those don't include the acute accent needed on the first 'e' of 'Les Miserables')

The "More..." in that menu indicates "More languages that are not suggested in this menu". That's why it opens the "Character" dialog; it has a tab page named "Font" where you can select any language.

If I understand you correctly, you where expecting "more suggestions for the word Miserables".

But the suggestions you get, are based on the language of the word.
Assuming the word has English as language, it seems the English dictionary does not offer "Misérables" as suggestion for "Miserables".

If you change the language of "Miserables" to French (France), the word is still underlined as mistake; and if you right click on the misspelled word, the French dictionary offers "Misérables".

What "other language options" do you expect to find in the "Character" dialog? More suggestions for the word? More guessed languages?

It looks like the language guesser could be improved, as "Miserables" is more similar to Spanish and French than the languages it suggested (English (UK), English (USA), German (Germany)).

Hi Ariel, no I wasn't expecting more suggestions for the word Miserables. I was expecting a list of other languages (from which I could select French). When I saw the format options I assumed that this was confined to format options and I failed to spot that it also included a language option.

So my fault for failing to look more closely at what I'd assumed was a wrong link (to me the term 'format' just refers to appearance hence my otherwise inexcusable failure to look more closely)

I think it would make sense to assure that the right pane is active, when the Character Format dialog is opened from this context menu entry.

IMHO just changing the active tab in Character window from Font Effects/Position/Hyperlink/Background to Font is not the best solution.
It is easy to overlook the Language list box.
I agree with Marek from issue 87255 about abiword's Set Language (this attachment).
