Description dwheeler 2003-03-12 05:51:46 UTC
It'd be nice if OpenOffice.org could measure the readability of a document.
There are several algorithms to do this.

But even more useful would be a way to request a list of the
"most complicated" sentences as measured by readability criteria, or at
least list (in sorted order) the sentences with the largest
number of words. That way, after writing, authors can
identify and simplify its most complicated sentences.

The Perl CPAN module Lingua::EN::Fathom (supported by
Lingua::EN::Syllable) implements several algorithms to measure readibility.
The Flesch-Kincaid and FOG algorithms are common.

You can see a list of readability grades manual page for Gnu Style:

  http://www.delorie.com/gnu/docs/diction/style.1.html

I would really like to see this implemented in the statistic of the document.

But also on selected styles, pages, paragraphs because some of the grades
should not count words in headlines etc.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
