Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 122690
[sidebar] Shortcut key for Navigator and Stylist deck
Last modified: 2023-03-25 16:31:53 UTC
With sidebar, the shortcuts keys to display or hide Navigator (F5) and Stylist (F11) are outdated. Maybe, that will be better to affect it to sidebar directly. F5 and F11 to switch respectively to Navigator and Stylist deck.
Agree. I really don't understand the designer of the sidebar. For example: Sidebar - Properties - Graphic Most people prepare picture before and not during document preparation. Adjustments of brightness, contrast, color mode, transparency, RGB and gamma are performed in dedicated graphic viewers before Insert - Picture - From File... The entire deck is just useless. Sidebar - Properties - Text Most people use Ctrl+B for bold. The popular keyboard shortcut makes bold icon useless. etc.

Do you have numbers to prove your point? > The entire deck is just useless. How so? You speak of "most people". That leaves some people for which the panel is useful. > > Sidebar - Properties - Text > Most people use Ctrl+B for bold. The popular keyboard shortcut makes bold > icon useless. I disagree. We can not drop buttons or menu entries just because there exists a keyboard shortcut for them. Keyboard shortcuts are more for power users. Not all users belong to that category. BTW: How is the above rant related to the bug description? > > etc.
@oooforum: Good idea. However, I would like to wait for the 4.0 release to see how well (or not) the sidebar is received. After that we can start a discussion about how to remove functionality from toolbars and menus that is better accessible via the sidebar.
The "rant" is about sidebar usage, just like the good suggestion by oooforum. You ask: "Do you have numbers to prove your point?" I ask the same for "I would like to wait for the 4.0 release to see how well (or not) the sidebar is received." Is there some "help make AOO better" mechanism I don't know of in 4.0 to anonymously report usage?

Yes, and did not yet get an answer :-) > > I ask the same for "I would like to wait for the 4.0 release to see how well > (or not) the sidebar is received." Waiting for the release is a prerequisite for asking a larger audience for their opinion. That is one way to get numbers to base future decisions on. > > Is there some "help make AOO better" mechanism I don't know of in 4.0 to > anonymously report usage? Sadly, no. That feature is not available anymore. But it would be good to get it working again. But that leaves enough ways to get feedback from our users.
(In reply to Andre from comment #5) > > Yes, and did not yet get an answer :-) > Just based on personal observation when working with colleagues (Microsoft Office is used in workplace but behavior is still valid).
Thank you to stay on topic. This is not a debate to know if sidebar is useless or not. Maybe you should initiate this kind of discussion on dev list
