Description Mike 2013-08-04 08:35:19 UTC
Calc 4.0.0 opens a 93 sheet Excel file but crashes when saving it
If the file is opened in Excel excel crashes requiring a computer reboot
If Calc 3.4.1 is used there is no issue
Have found Calc 4.0.0 does not retain conditional formatting from Excel as well as 3.4.1

Please attach or provide link to spreadsheet.

I was able to replicate the first part of this bug.
When creating a spreadsheet with a very large file size(roughly 57 mb), the program stopped responding right after the save was completed.
The save takes about 5 minutes to finish for a file this size.
I was able to open the spreadsheet in excel and then reopen in Calc.
When reopening the file in Calc, the document recovery window was displayed, but then stopped responding after it was completed.

Operating System: Tested in Windows 7 and Windows 8
OO Version: 4.0.0
Excel Version: MS Office Excel 2013

I'm speaking with Sam Brandler about his replication of this bug.

The contents of the file were 4000 rows down, 3 across (numbers from a course). He would copy this set, paste it to a clean page, then create a new page and do it again. He would save after every 5 pages, then paste again. He stopped at 100 pages. It saved, could be reopened in Excel, but not in OOo Calc.

Sam then created an exactly 93-page document (4000 rows, 3 columns per page), saved it, and the program stopped responding. He force-closed Calc, then restarted Calc from the start menu and tried to open the file once Calc was running. It gave the document recovery window, the document was recovered, he could look at the contents, edit and make changes, but OOo would crash again when he attempted to save it. When he opened the same doc in Excel, it worked OK.

More on the test configurations:

Windows 7 (all-updates-applied) Samsung laptop, 3rd gen core i7, 8 gigs ram. Windows 8 was 2nd-gen core i7 Dell with 8 gigs of ram.

This bug might be a modern replication of 3385 or related to 13178

Using Win 7 with Open Office 4.0.1 I could not recreate this crash. I made sheet in Excel with 13 columns and 4000 rows filled with descending numbers. This file was about 90 pages. I saved this file as an ods and Calc remained stable. I went back into excel and increased to rows to 5000 which equated to 107 pages. This was also saved and Calc again remained stable. I repeated the same process with 6000, 7000, and 8000 rows.

Confirmed per comment 2.

A crash when save does not look like an open-import bug?

Without a sample document we can't do anything. Currently we even do not know what kind of "Excel File" we are talking about .

Back to UNCONFIRMED until we will have a sample document
