Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 124794
Create icons for menus and toolbars
Last modified: 2014-05-06 13:27:23 UTC
One of the nicest features AOO is the very wide choice of toolbar icons presented. However at present a large number of commands lack a true icon. Unfortunately many of these are extremely useful, some arguably indispensable. The result is that the user has to resort to the text labels (as used in the menus) as icons when customising the toolbar. Many of these are extremely cumbersome, spanning 30 or more characters. Having to install such 'icons' rather defeats the point of having a toolbar. Here are some egregious examples of commands which may be though of as vital: In the Bullets and Numbering toolbar: 'Continue previous numbering' 'To Previous Paragraph in Level' 'To Next Paragraph in Level' 'Outline numbering' 'Word count' 'Sidebar' 'New Window' 'Select to Beginning of Paragraph' A welcome enhancement would be to develop a consistent set of icons so that every command has a true icon and the alphabetical ones are entirely eliminated. In this would be sensible to build on and develop the existing methodology or 'syntax' (for want of a better term), so that the icons are comprehensible and consistent. This idea was first floated in bug 121766 and received encouragement. Sorry for the delay in posting. It has been prompted by the thread today on the users mailing list under the title 'no icon for track changes'. END
Toolbars - Toolbar Content - Modify - Change Icon... Or are you requesting icon assignment by default?
(In reply to Edwin Sharp from comment #1) > Toolbars - Toolbar Content - Modify - Change Icon... > > Or are you requesting icon assignment by default? Thanks. Yes - sorry for any lack of clarity. Fear that most users will never get that far. (It was unknown to me until today). The suggestion is that when you hit Toolbars - Customise - Toolbars - Add every Command has a true icon in the left hand column, which would be what you get if you hit 'add'. At present, if there is not one and the left hand column is empty, you get the alphabetic label such as 'Preview in Web Browser' or 'Autopilot: Address Data Source'. Does that clarify?
Confirmed with AOO410m18(Build:9764) - Rev. 1589052 2014-04-22 11:43:54 (Di, 22 Apr 2014) Win 7
I don't think that this request is toolbar related. Probably there is no icon at all for lots of commands what also will be missing in Menu Pulldwons. The problem is that it will not be useful to have tons of not-distinguishable icons. We already have some Bug reports to add existing icons and additional ones to create icons. So let's take this one as a Task Meta Bug. To add a related Bug please cite complete Summary of that Bug report and add bug ID to "Depends on" field
Depends on "Issue 69786 - In Table insert/delete menu some icons are missing": At least it would be easy to create a 'Delete table' icon with all cells red'
I add "Issue 124808 - Use Existing Icon 'uno:DataFilterRemoveFilter' for Toolbar and Menu"

Agreed that it potentially a problem, hence the suggestion of developing a consistent syntax for icons. Perhaps they could be built up in layers? Then you might have a graphic S for style and a graphic T for template as the base. Overlaid that could be transparent icons for 'create new' 'edit' 'update' 'delete' or whatever. If such a system can be worked out, it should overcome the difficulty of non-distinguishable icons. It exists to a limited extent already, but would need to be built upon and expanded. > > We already have some Bug reports to add existing icons and additional ones > to create icons. 'Addressbook source' 'Catalogue' and 'Set Focus of Combo Box' would also seem to be mislocated. There does not seem to be a bug report for this. Will this suffice, or do you need one (or more?) ?
