Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 126643
Saving old MS Word docs without making them read-only
Last modified: 2016-09-22 19:52:23 UTC
I have an old MS-Word file containing on-line user ID's and passwords. Naturally it is password protected. I opened it with OpenOffice Writer, entered the password and saved it as an OpenOffice document, and when I opened it again in OpenOffice, it came up as 'read-only' and would not let me change this. I wound up copying it and pasting the contents into a new OpenOffice document and now it works normally. Is there a bug here? Does it have anything to do with the fact that the original file was password protected? I have opened other old MSWord docs not password protected and saved them into OOWriter format and not seen this same issue.
Have you tried the [Edit File] button (somewhat right to the [Save] icon)? It's possible that just the view went to the read-only mode. But when pressing the icon you can go back to the edit mode.
Herman L, April 9, 2016 Hardware: PC OS: Windows 7 Writer version: 4.1.2 I was able to reproduce this bug, using the same version of Writer. I used an MS Word document that was saved as 97-2003 format and included a password. When I opened this file in Writer, and performed a "Save As" action without a password and saved it as an .odt file, I found that upon re-opening it, I wasn't able to edit the file as it was set to be read-only. Steps to Reproduce: 1) Create MS Word document, with password protection, and save it as an older format "Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc), if none available (see attachment) 2) Open this file in OpenOffice Writer 3) Enter password, when prompted ("password" for attached file). 4) With the MS Word document open, select "Save As" from the "File" menu. 5) Select "ODF Text Document (.odt)(*.odt)" from the "Save as Type" dropdown list 6) Deselect "Save with password" checkbox and save. 7) Close the saved file and reopen it in Writer 8) Click the "Edit File" icon, if it is not already selected 9) Enter text into the document and note error message. Actual Results: The Writer version of the file is not editable. When the user tries to edit the contents of the document, an error message is displayed stating that "Readonly content cannot be changed. No modifications will be accepted". Expected Results: The file is editable. Build Date & Platform: 2015-10-21 build on Windows 7

I attempted to replicate this bug with the following methods using the MS Word document in 97-2003 attachment: OS: Mac OSX 10.11.6 Writer version: 4.1.2 Test 1:(replicated successfully) 1. Open the file using OpenOffice Writer 2. Entered the password (it loaded as read-only)(pic) 3. Re save the file as .odt (pic) 4. Make sure the “Read-Only” checkbox is not filled in 5. Close current file and open the newly saved file 6. Came across the error “Readonly content cannot be changed. No modifications will be accepted.” Test 2:(replicated successfully) 1. Open the file using OpenOffice Writer 2. Entered the password (it loaded as read-only)(pic) 3. Re save the file as .odt (pic) 4. Filled in the password for Editing as well as viewing 5. Close current file and open the newly saved file 6. Came across the same error Test 3:(workaround) 1. Open the file using MS word doc 2. Make small edit and save the file 3. Open in Open office (no longer loads as read-only) 4. Save-as .odt file 5. Close current file and open the newly saved file 6. Newly file is now editable Not sure if this is a bug with conversion from old MS-word to ODT, but it seems that you can avoid this bug by making an edit in MS-word and then opening it in OO.
