Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 126756
Pictures Inserted into Footnotes Disappear Upon Exiting Writer
Last modified: 2015-12-30 22:46:11 UTC
I've created a Writer document with lots of footnotes. I need to be able to insert pictures (screen snapshots) from files into the footnotes, which appears to work just fine. That is, until I exit from Writer, then restart Writer and open the document to discover that the pictures I inserted are no longer visible at the places where they had been inserted. I'm hoping there is some easy workaround, other than "don't insert picture files into footnotes".

After further investigation, I found that this issue only occurs when saving in the .doc format, instead of the .odt format. So, the workaround is to generate the file saving in the .odt format. Then, only when necessary, save as .doc format and print or make PDFs with the footnote pictures visible (before exiting Writer, which will in effect erase the footnote pictures in the .doc version of the document).
I had similar results with the Linux-32 version of 4.1.2. If you can, please confirm that some other word processor which claims to support ".doc" format on output, produces the results you desire. In other words, if you use MS Office directly, can you add footnotes with an image and save correctly? What happens when you import that into Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2?
I don't have access to MS Office to try this. The reason I ask is that not ALL actions in AOO are supported in the ".doc" format. Typically you get a warning that some styling might be lost, etc. if you try to save in any of the MS Office formats. In summary, images in footnotes might not be something that is even currently supported in the ".doc" format (and of course, this depends on the actual version of that.) I would at least try adding the images to footnotes using some other product that claims to be 100% compatible with (some version of) MS Office and see what happens. It could be that adding images to footnotes is something only AOO allows. It could be this is not even an issue.
