The 4.1.2-patch1 batch files with German translation

I've added the German translation for the 4.1.2-patch1 batch files.
Comment 2 orcmid 2016-08-21 20:20:53 UTC
Resetting the assignee. 4.1.2-patch1 is not secret and the localization of the 4.1.2-patch1 procedure for Windows can be provided in public.

I changed the title to be specific to the German translation. Mixing up languages on a single issue can be too confusing.

Are you going to provide translations for anything beside the Windows hotfix downloads?

OK.

(I only believed it would be useful to have all the translations for the patch in one issue.)

I do not understand this question. Can you rephrase it?

Will you translate some README of the 4.1.2-patch1 distributions for MacOSX, Linux32, and Linux64?

Google Translate Experiment:
Werden Sie irgendein README der 4.1.2-patch1 Verteilungen für MacOSX, Linux32 und Linux64 übersetzen?

[Google suggested "alle README" for "any READM" and I had to fix it after reverse-translating [;<).

We are planning to provide also a translated Readme file (Windows only currently) and Hotfix download webpage for tomorrow.(In reply to orcmid from comment #2)

I can translate the Readme for Linux32 and Linux64, but only in the next few days.
I will _not_ translate the instructions for MacOS, because I do not understand MacOS.

You will see that both files are the same, except for line 7.

Me, too. But I think it's not that difficult.

So, it seems we can get the whole patch translated within the next week. That's great.

German language REVERT-4.1.2-patch1_de.bat (as .txt)

This completes review of the APPLY and REVERT scripts for German-language users.

 1. Each script sets the console to display in UTF-8, the code used in the scripts.

 2. Layout is adjusted to avoid lines that are too long for default command-line display.

 3. All scripts have been tested to function properly on installations of Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2 using Windows 10. They will also be checked with Windows XP.

The scripts fail on Windows XP. They exit immediately after the code page is set to 65001 (Unicode).

It seems for the German .bat scripts, ISO 8859-1 needs to be used.

The Readme can still be in UTF8, since Windows XP Notepad, Internet Explorer, and other tools (including OpenOffice) will display it correctly.

I will test ISO 8859-1 versions of the scripts on Tuesday (US Pacific Time).

Updated APPLY/REVERT Scripts in ISO 8859-1

This Zip file contains the two scripts in ISO 8859-1 character set encoding.

These scripts do run in an English-language Windows XP, but the change to code page 1252 has no effect, so the extended characters used for German do not appear correctly. This is an improvement over the Unicode cases, which cause the scripts to fail.

These scripts should appear properly on a Windows XP that is installed with German as the operating-system language.

 1. If someone has a German Windows XP, please confirm that running these scripts produces correct characters.

 2. If (1) is successful, the German README may need to warn users that on non-German Windows XP configurations, the extended characters used for German may not appear properly.

This needs to be reconciled before we distribute these.
Comment 12 Marcus 2016-08-23 17:55:09 UTC
@orcmid:
As an alternative I can re-write the scripts to avoid any special characters, so that it's pure ASCII. Maybe it's easier and faster than to do the codepage changes.

That would certainly work.

I think we are still waiting for the README, so there is time.

The 4.1.2-patch1 with German translation for Mac Readme, Windows Readme, Windows batch files

I've added a new Zip file for the German translation of the 4.1.2-patch1. This contains:

- Mac Readme
- Windows Readme
- Windows batch files (incl. fixed special characters)

For the Mac Readme, I propose to simply add MacOSC.README_de.txt to the
single Zip.

That way, there is one download for either language. Both READMEs will be available to read first from the hotfix.html page.

How does that sound?

So, that means translated Readme's will not be included in the Mac and Linux Zip files? Only in the Windows Zip files due to the batch files?

For me this should be OK.

PS:
Linux is coming in the next days.

Mac OSX README files (English and German)

I have provided a quick review of the English and German README files for the MacOSX 4.1.2-patch1 hotfix material.

I added hard line breaks and kept the lines short enough for terminal display.
There was no change in wording as part of this.

I did update each to include the other in the manifest. And I propose to add both to the single Zip, making a single download for all languages.

Unless there are corrections or more changes required, these are the files I will make available through the hotfix.html page and in the Zip (with new signatures and hashes).

I propose to put all READMEs in each Zip for MacOSX, Linux32, and Linux64. The Zip would have them both, the hotfix.html page would link to both also.

Yes, on Windows there is one Zip for each language that has localized scripts.

Windows APPLY and REVERT scripts (German)

This Zip contains proof-read versions of APPLY-4.1.2-patch1_de.bat and REVERT-4.1.2-patch1_de.bat. There were no wording changes. One message was corrected and all lines and displays were adjusted to avoid word wrap on the command-line display.

 1. Added a link to where the .zip is to be downloaded from.

 2. Added _de to the end of some file names that need it.

 3. Added Dick Groskamp to the contributors.

 4. Everything else is cleanup of whitespace to have lines not too wide.

There is an addition needed in step 9 of the README. It adds, before the Note,

If there is the message "Windows protected your PC" from Windows
Smartscreen, click on the "More info" link. On the next message,
click "Run anyway." If you do not trust this, do not use the .bat
   script.

Oh, I didn't know that here is something uncovered. However, I cannot see this in the original or translated text:

Where can I see the context of the paragraph?

Ahm, not really. ;-) The following *could* be good ...

"Wenn die Meldung "Windows hat Ihren PC geschützt" von Windows
Smartscreen angezeigt wird, dann klicken Sie auf den "Mehr Info"-Link.
Bei der nächsten Meldung klicken Sie auf "In jedem Fall ausführen".
Wenn Sie dem nicht vertrauen, dann sollten Sie die .bat-Skriptdatei
nicht verwenden.
"

... but I need to know the context in any case to provide also a *suitable* translation.

The new English Section 9:

 9. APPLYING THE PATCH AUTOMATICALLY.
Double-click the file APPLY-4.1.2-patch1.bat. The automated
procedure will open a window in which progress is reported.

If there is the message "Windows protected your PC" from Windows
Smartscreen, click on the "More info" link. On the next message,
click "Run anyway." If you do not trust this, do not use the script.

[Note: If using the automatic procedure is ineffective for some
reason, it is possible to accomplish the same result manually.
See the Appendix at the end of this document.]

    Dokuments hier.]

Two paragraphs were already there. The paragraph in the middle is the new one.

I cannot check the German or Dutch messages either. The most predictable way to obtain them is on Windows 10 using Internet Explorer for the download.

If there is nothing further, I will commit the new READMEs to the release branch.

It would be good to get to "Verified" first. We think it is fixed, but we do not yet have confirmation in the world that it is working all right.

Something to think about for the future. I think we often close issues too quickly.

I've now checked the German translation incl. the both batch files. They install and uninstall the patch and show the translated text in the console window. So, all is fine.

The same applies for the English original version.

Right, first we have to verify the things we have done. Next time I will try to think about that first.

But now I think it would be OK to close this issue - if it won't already.
