Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 127582
Needless to have "Update links" dialog prompt
Last modified: 2022-03-21 14:35:22 UTC
Steps to reproduce 1) Open a spreadsheet 2) Menu Insert > Picture > From file... 3) In dialogbox, select a picture and be sure that "Link" box is checked 4) Close the dialog Picture is inserted but "Update links" dialogbox appears suddenly. For me, useless to get this prompt.
OpenOffice 4.1.4 introduces additional explicit requests to prevent misuse of the link functionality that could result in security issues. That said, if there are cases where the current fixes become too annoying for users, we can surely discuss these. For example, we can whitelist certain cases or have a way to suppress the requests.

There is no need for this dialogue at this point. A fresh inserted link is up to date. Inserting a picture in other modules doesn't show this dialogue.

Unfortunately, link updating is handled very differently in spreadsheets from the other modules. The related fix for the other modules was much, much simpler, easier, and less obtrusive. For spreadsheets, the price of getting the dialog in all cases in which it is needed is some appearances when it is not needed, including the case in this bug report. The spreadsheet implementation makes it difficult to separate out the cases.
Other weird behavior: save and reopen the document created in comment 1. This prompt appears on Start Center before loading the spreadsheet. Tthis may disturb the end-user.

If you're getting multiple reports of a problem, maybe you should do something about it! On a related note, I said that I was going to re-install 4.1.3 which didn't have this problem, but when I tried the installer said it was interrupted & could not finish. This seems to be another recurring problem, from what I've read! One solution suggested was to do a restart; I tried that and it didn't work!

How much work is it to move from the link codebase od calc to the link codebase the other modules use? I would expect that it is more work, but at the same time simplify the code for us. Simplification has in my eyes a big value for us. But I do not know how much work this is.
An issue in 4.1.5 When opening a spreadsheet with links to other spreadsheets I am asked multiple times (as many as four times) to "Update All Links?". This is with Macro Security set to "Low", using spreadsheets in a "Trusted File Location" only, and with Update Links when Opening set to "Always". Cheers
(In reply to Cam from comment #10) > This is with Macro Security set to "Low", using spreadsheets in a "Trusted > File Location" only, and with Update Links when Opening set to "Always". Macro and update links are two different things. Set down security level don't change links behavior. So this workaround is a mistake.

I didn't say this is a workaround, quite the opposite. I was reporting the same error as above and providing information about the settings used while getting this behaviour.
You can take me off the list for this. I no longer use Open Office. I now use Libre Office.
Good luck! ;-)
I have the same issue as in Comment 10 using OpenOffice 4.1.10 on macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra). In my case, I get two *different* prompts when I open a spreadsheet file that contains 16 links to another file in one column and one link to the same file in another column. The first prompt is "Update all links?". The second prompt is "This file contains links to other files. Should they be updated?". I get the second prompt even after I respond "No" to the first prompt. For the record, the setting of Preferences > OpenOffice Calc > General > Update links when opening seems to have no effect.
