Characters don't be erased but are overwritten.

OS: LinuxMint 19.1-64 Mate

ApacheOpenOffice 4.1.6 or 4.1.5 cannot handle alterations of style in Writer or values in Extras | Options.
This seems to be a problem of LinuxMint 19.x-64 (Ubuntu 18.04)

The terminal reads (shortly after starting):

WARNING **: 10:25:13.758: Unknown type: GailWindow

Problems do not appear in LinuxMint 18.3-64 Mate (Ubuntu 16.04) or 17.3-4 Mate (Ubuntu 14.04).

Attachment shows overwritten values of styles, fonts, fontsizes

Could you try our classical procedure: reset the profile.
Detailed information can be found in https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12426

And report back

I reset the AOO's profile of the "regular" and of the parallel installation:
The bug remained as described.

The terminal read nearly identical for both approaches:

** (soffice:3079): WARNING **: 14:53:13.421: Unknown type: GailWindow

I don't understand what you means by "parallel".
What is the path exactly?

I de-installed LibreOffice as "main application" for office works.

Then I installed AOO 4.1.6 as "main application" (sudo dpkg -i *.deb).

Additionally installation in parallels (for i in ./*.deb; do dpkg-deb -x $i . ; done) in folder in /home/<user>.

Different user profiles (I altered the bootstraprc file for parallel version).

Sounds like issue 126980

If you refer to:
** (soffice:3079): WARNING **: 14:53:13.421: Unknown type: GailWindow

I have seen this message for the past years every time I start AOO from shell. I doubt that it has anything to do with this particular issue.

I downloaded from https://ci.apache.org/projects/openoffice/install/
the latest current versions 4.2.0 and 4.5.1. and installed them on
LinuxMint 19.1-64 Mate.
Both versions show the same graphics fault as originally descripted.

I can confirm the behavior with all AOO 4.x.x Versions on Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon

The issue is easy to reproduce:
Open Writer
Change style or font
done

Save dialog and selection fiels in sidebar are also affected

Mint 19 uses Mint-y themes as Default. If you switch control panels to Mint-x or related themes it works.

However, the issue also occurs on Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon if you switch to Mint-y themes.

In both Mint versions you can restore the view by toggling to Page-View and back (but this won't work in Save dialog)

No issue with AOO 3.4.1 and Mint-y themes.
But if you start AOO 3.4.1 in a Terminal the "Gail-Window" warning is also shown
