Description Peter Pratten 2021-06-25 21:11:58 UTC
I had been trying out test file https://home.apache.org/~mseidel/AOO-builds/AOO-4111-Test/Full%20Installation/Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.11_Win_x86_install_en-US_f2fa887bab.exe under issue 128453 concerning .wpl files.
On returning to inserting a .txt file into a slide AOO crashed due to unexpected error. Both the Impress file I was working on and another which was open both had to be recovered. I retried the insertion and the same thing happened again.
Comment 1 Matthias Seidel 2021-06-25 21:53:06 UTC
And did that ever work before?
Comment 2 Matthias Seidel 2021-06-25 21:54:27 UTC
Is this the same like Issue 128462?
Comment 3 Peter Pratten 2021-06-25 22:54:58 UTC
This is a new fault which appeared when using the test 4.1.11 file. It concerns a crash when inserting a .txt file and affects an open writer as well as impress files.
Issue 128462 related to .odt file being inserted so is not related.
I need the system working tomorrow so will have to revert to 4.1.10.
Comment 4 Matthias Seidel 2021-06-25 22:57:05 UTC
Please test again with AOO 4.1.10.

I doubt that this is related to the 4.1.1 Test build.
Comment 5 Peter Pratten 2021-06-26 00:08:36 UTC
It's back to 4.1.10 and still crashing. I've been inputting .txt files to Impress slides for weeks. No idea what is wrong and I have to have it working Sunday morning.
Comment 6 Matthias Seidel 2021-06-26 00:21:11 UTC
That's what I expected.

Try renaming your OpenOffice profile. In most cases that helps.
Comment 7 Peter Pratten 2021-06-26 00:31:51 UTC
I'm sorry, I don't understand. I tried logging to a different account but that would only affect activity on the web and prevent me from reply to this bug report.
Comment 8 Arrigo Marchiori 2021-06-26 08:55:09 UTC
Hello Peter,

could you provide example files (both Impress and text) that cause the crash?

Windows when crash occur inserting .txt file
Comment 10 Peter Pratten 2021-06-26 18:06:58 UTC
I'm back from village commitments. The two issues we are on require different versions of OOo.
Here I'm on v4.1.10. I've tried remaking the profile as suggested and everything hung up, even the Start button failed to open to provide a restart. Eventually a right-click in open space on the desktop woke the machine up. I restarted and cleared the new OpenOffice profile file and started Impress. Insert file crashed as before. I noticed that the file browser was the standard Windows one not the AAO which I had got used to. Attached crash report shows two windows which actually overlapped. Recovery then followed as expected.
Copy and paste the text file worked.
Comment 11 Matthias Seidel 2021-06-26 18:08:11 UTC
If I remember it right this already happens with AOO 4.1.10?
Comment 12 Matthias Seidel 2021-06-26 18:15:18 UTC
Thanks for the screenshot.

What we now need is a step-by-step instruction how to recreate that crash.

That sounds like you had AOO open when you renamed the profile?
Comment 14 Peter Pratten 2021-06-26 18:33:43 UTC
I had open an Impress file with an empty slide selected.
I clicked Insert > File -> Explorer opens (now Windows style, previously AOO style).
I selected any .txt file > Open -> crash windows shown in attachment.

Before testing file in the original description this did not occur. It started after the test without returning to 4.1.10. Now it occurs every time on 4.1.10. No change in procedure or file. No change with new profile.
Comment 15 Matthias Seidel 2021-06-26 18:36:49 UTC
I cannot reproduce that.

The Windows Explorer is default, you have to change it in Tools -Options if you want the OO dialog.

Mid air Collision!
Comment #14 is a reply to comment #12.
Reply to comment 13# follows.
There were two Impress files open, I closed one and the other disappeared so the was nothing to close.
Comment 17 Peter Pratten 2021-06-26 18:44:07 UTC
Another mid-air collision!
Reply to comment #15:
This may be due to new profile, though I don't recall ever setting it to the OO one.

And you are sure that there was no process open from the "disappeared" Impress file?

Maybe someone else can recreate the crash? I can import a text file into an empty Impress slide without problem.
Comment 19 Peter Pratten 2021-06-26 19:10:57 UTC
That "disappearance" was subsequent to the start of crashing. A hidden file may have caused the hanging of everything, but how can I see the "disappeared"?

As for the changes in format, and the new profile didn't solve the problem of the crash, would it be best to return to the original (hopefully no more hidden process). I never found any Quick start icon (Skype keeps appearing and I never use it).

I am sure that the renaming of the profile went wrong. Otherwise I should be able to recreate your crash.

Please reboot your PC and (as the first) action, rename the OO profile.
Comment 21 Peter Pratten 2021-06-26 19:47:28 UTC
I rebooted, deleted the profile, opened Impress so a new profile was created, tried to insert a file but it still crashed.
Comment 22 Matthias Seidel 2021-06-26 19:51:37 UTC
Then I am out of the race.

Until we cannot recreate it we do not know what is wrong on your side. Maybe the files you use?
Comment 23 Peter Pratten 2021-06-26 19:59:07 UTC
It's the same files that I used before it started crashing.
Comment 24 Peter Pratten 2021-06-26 20:02:03 UTC
I'd better go to issue 128453. See you there.
Comment 25 Peter Pratten 2021-06-26 21:24:28 UTC
As you will have seen there the new test 4.1.11 cured the crashes.
Only outstanding is issue #128462.
Comment 26 Matthias Seidel 2021-06-27 16:35:52 UTC
That's odd, since that build doesn't change anything in that respect.
It only adds m4a to the list of secure extensions.

Nevertheless, can we close this issue?
Comment 27 Peter Pratten 2021-06-27 16:44:56 UTC
I'm at a loss to how it occurred and disappeared. It is now working. I'd better not return to 4.1.10 so close the issue.
Comment 28 Matthias Seidel 2021-06-27 17:54:25 UTC
According to the last comment.
Comment 29 Peter Pratten 2021-06-30 17:57:05 UTC
It's crashing again!
New ODP not from my template.
Insert > File > select plain TXT file -> OpenOffice Document Recovery.
Tried several times, on one occasion I had to run the recovery twice to get the ODP open.
