All these OpenOffice files are here but not in the Taskbar and can't open them in the Start Menu.

I open a MP4 file from OpenOffice Main Menu and a small video window and it played and then closed it. I still here sound from the video and can't open any OpenOffice programs at all.
Comment 1 Matthias Seidel 2022-06-26 19:48:22 UTC
Your OpenOffice is hung with several instances.

Please close all of them, open AOO again and check if the problem still occurs.

BTW: You would find better help on the forum:

I don't know what AOO is, but I had to have Task Manger close them all.
And yes, it does it again and again.
Comment 3 Matthias Seidel 2022-06-26 20:37:44 UTC
AOO is Apache OpenOffice, the program you are using.

Please restart your computer:

Comment 4 Paul Haneline 2022-06-26 21:38:49 UTC
Restating does not fix it.
Comment 5 Matthias Seidel 2022-06-26 22:08:26 UTC
You did restart without hibernating (like explained in the link)?

Then please ask on the forum, there is something weird with your computer.

Thers no such thing as restarting and hibernating.
Eather, I restart, shutoff, hibernate, or the shutdown with fast boot enable (it's kind of like hibernate but that's disabled.

Have you ever tried opening a media file?
In v4.1.12 open up Open Officer or Write. In Write goto "file" and "open" a MP4 file. You'll get a window, and it will play the media.
Now try closing it. The sound is still going to be there.
I tried this on another computer an got the same resaults.
Comment 8 billp 2022-06-28 23:12:18 UTC
This isn't limited to Windows. I see similar behavior using AOO 4.1.12 on Ubuntu Mate. Normally, File > Exit shuts down AOO, but if an MP3 or MP4 file has been opened by AOO, File > Exit doesn't appear to do anything. The open window(s) can be closed using File > Close or the X in the upper right of the window, but AOO will continue to run invisibly in the background. Trying to restart AOO normally only starts new soffice/soffice.bin processes without opening an AOO window. The soffice/soffice.bin processes have to be ended in System Monitor to get AOO to restart normally.

Thank you.

Tested with 4.1.12 and Windows 7 x64 Pro with these steps:
0) open the Windows task manager
1) run AOO and see the soffice process
2) File > Open
3) Select a .mp3 in the dialogbox
4) This opens ActiveMovie window, play the file and close
5) During step 4, see the process appears and vanished
6) File > Quit and see the soffice process vanished too

So I don't reproduce

I think the OP is talking about M4A (sound) files.
You can also try wit MP3.

I never once said anything about mp3.
mp4 is the problem.
Comment 13 Peter 2022-07-15 08:51:16 UTC
I can confirm an issue with mp4 files on Ubuntu 20.04

Steps to reproduce:
1. OpenOpenOffice
2. Open File
3. Select MP4 file
4. close OpenOpenOffice
5. select top: you see a crashed soffice.bin.

I have used the 4.1.13 RC candidate.

Maybe my issue is slightly different thought.

JMF don't support MP4 format:

JMF is obsolete (it was once used as a fallback when there was no native implementation available on the target platform). OpenOffice uses different native implementations for Windows (DirectShow), macOS (AVFoundation) and Linux (gstreamer), so the bug might be in common code or OS-dependent code.

On the other hand, AOO is not a media player. So opening this kind of file really doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Use the right tool like VLC.
Comment 17 Peter 2022-07-18 05:11:53 UTC
We offer the feature to play multimedia files at least in Impress.
So in theory we could play the mediafile. We could also pop a message that there is no MP4 editor at this point. Which could be also a valid reaction on Open of the mp4 file.

Crash is something I would like to avoid.

Agreed, but in this case, the audio file is *imported* under Impress.
Not open directly from AOO.

+1 OpenOffice is not a media player :-)

Are we here to avoid a crash or fix the problem regardless of it's not supposed to play MP4s or not?

Not really a crash but a hang up where you have to go into Task Manger and force close ALL AOO programs to get back control of AOO.
Comment 20 Peter 2022-07-19 06:58:50 UTC
+1 Paul.
we use the word "crash" to mark Issues with crashes or freezes. I use them therefore also interchangeably. Sorry if that leads to confusion.

So I think we are all now on the same boat again. I set the Issue to confirmed, since I see no objection anymore to the issue.
Comment 21 oooforum (fr) 2022-07-19 07:48:21 UTC
As said before, this problem is that AOO should not be able to open the media files.

The "Open" dialogbox have a wrong parameter with "All files" and not "All document(s)". See https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=74295
