Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 12861
Selecting text from the margins could be optimized ala Word
Last modified: 2005-06-14 02:03:37 UTC
A handy feature when selecting text in Word is that by clicking on the margins, a user can easily select blocks of text. The behavior in response to single: double:triple clicking in Word is to select a point:word:paragraph from within the text, or a line:paragraph:all from the left margin. This is a feature I use quite often in Word, and I'd love to see a conveniant way to select whole paragraphs and to "select all" in what is in general a no-compromise word processor. Thanks and Good Luck, hunwalla

I agree that text selection using the mouse could be improved, especially the triple left click which should select an entire paragraph instead of just a line of text. As a writer I often need to move whole paragraphs of text as I edit a document, sometimes it would be helpful to have a way of selecting a sentence, almost never is selecting a line useful. The way MS Word implements this feature is as follows: With mouse pointer within a paragraph: -Single click positions cursor at the desired location -Double click selects the word -Triple click selects an entire paragraph. With mouse pointer in the margin: -Single click selects an entire line -Double click selects the entire paragraph -Triple click = select all I mention this not because OOo Writer needs to be a me-too application but because ease of moving text for editing is key to being productive as a writer and hence this is an essential enhancement. This has also been mentioned in issue# 18076
This is fixed in m_56 and above, and will be in OO 2.0
