Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 13791
Text flowing around table should not require frame
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:22:40 UTC
Hello everybody! 1. Put text wrapping settings into Table Properties: While working with OO I cannot get used to the fact that Table Properties lack settings for text wrapping. From my point of view it is neither user-friendly nor logical to not be able to set the text wrapping for a table in the table's properties. Instead what one has to do at the moment is put the table into a frame and look for text wrapping settings in the frame's properties. 2. Ability to select a row/column or the whole table with just one click. I think that it is common to format the first ro in a table bold. However to do this I have to drag the mouse all accross the line in order to select each cell individually. Same with colum. It would be useful to be able to point to the side of a row and by clicking be able to select the whole row. The same for colums, when pointing above or just below a column. Adding to that dragging a table to a new position, as well as deleting it at once would become much more user-friendly, if there was a way to select the whole table with just one click, e.g. by pointing right next to a corner of it. Sven
I split this issue and renamed it to decribe its content more precise. Text-flow should be set directly in the table's properties without having to place it in a frame.

Hello Andreas, here is an issue, which fits to the theme 'Tables' for Q.
Yes, it does.
Okay, to select a table and the to insert a text frame is not very user friendly. But the effort is very high and we don't have the resources to solve this for OOo2.0
Due to the high effort, floating table is a good thing for "OO later".

Issue 30477 is not actually a duplicate of this issue. That was my mistake; it has been corrected in issue 30477. My apologies. Steve

I just attached another bad import of MS doc with table. I suppose is the same issue.

18 duplicates and fouryears since this _bug_ (even if issue-type tells something different) was filed. Two years since it was reported "by an external evaluation project" as a problem, i.e not enhancement. But still the target milestone is on OO Later? How many more duplicates does it need to increase the priority from "fix within 5 years or never" to 2.2?

Andreas, just looking at the list of duplicates scares me - 25 issues. What are the plans for this enhancement? Regards, Kirill Palagin.

We have run across this issue in OOo 3.0 as well. When converting a document from MS Word to Writer which contains a table which has the Text wrapping property set to: "Around" the layout in Writer is all messed up. It displays two tables which should be one below the other on top of each other. Could we get the issue information updated to at least reflect the affected versions of OOo and possibly also upgrade this from an enhancement to a defect or a higher priority? Although creating frames is a workaround for people who create new documents I'm trying to get my company to migrate to OOo and all of our documents are in MS Word format. For us having the formatting of a lot of our documents messed up if we want to migrate to OOo is definitely a defect.
One last thing I forgot to add is that whether or not text wrapping around a table does or doesn't require frames is not actually the issue for me, however getting documents properly converted from MS Word format is (however that is handled). I've just tagged my comment on to here since I saw similar incidents with conversions were all being closed as duplicates of this one.
Status of this issue: Soory to say this, but AFAIK nobody is currently working on this issue. Nobody implements this feature and the developers working on import/export are working on other issues/problems. I cannot see into the future so I cannot state when somebody will start implementation but volunteers are welcome, of course!

CC Add for myself. A agree with the comments; this makes OOo look badly to our users when they receive documents from other agencies. Our document is a newsletter that is received every month. Our support staff has to open it in MS Office, export it to PDF and then send that to the user.

a lot of duplicates and no progress. Maybe it´s an enhancement but from a user´s point of view it´s an annoying bug, when "around" formatted word documents look pretty weird after an import into writer. In almost every migration scenario users will face this import problem and minimizing any interoperability problems should be a priority objective.

This issue is still present in OOo-Dev_DEV300_m53_Win32Intel version.
that is correct, since Target==OOo later and of course it is a pity, since we would want things going faster ..

Summary should contain word wrap, because this is how it is called in OO menus... --- A solution could be a faster possibility to put a frame around a table: When you rightclick on a picture, then caption, it will be created a frame around the picture (and the caption). When you then rightclick the frame, you can choose frame - wrap - several wrappings. When you rightclick a table, you can choose caption too. But this unfortunately doesn't create a caption around the table ... So one doesn't get the possibility to make text wrapping around the table (or one has to create a frame manually). Please change this. Captions of tables should be like captions of pictures inside frames. So an empty caption would create just a frame around the table. (Would be great, if automatically an empty caption would have a fontsize of just 1 (or 2) p.)
Well - it would be a solution only for small tables (but that would already help), see issue 7911
Is it possible that OOo move around table because more speed for work move largeur and longueur very fast. So we 'll be create specific table . Sorry for my englich langage.

I'd like to report that since my last comment about a year ago the implementation of OOo in our (10.000+ employee) company has been backed out and we've reverted back to using MS office. Also donations to OOo I had lined up have been cancelled by upper management all because of this issue. I have great respect for all the volunteers working hard on the OOo project, however I also wanted to point out that the effect of this bug has gone beyond user experience and has cost the project quite a large sum in donations.
@ tonyaker: Instead of waiting and if this enhancement is so important to you , you could use this money to pay a developer to implement. Remember: OpenOffice.org is open-source.
@jbfaure: Unfortunately we don't do software development as a company and it is much easier to get management to commit a set amount of money as a donation than it is to get them to commit an unknown amount of money for an activity which isn't our core business (especially something which apparently wasn't able to be solved in the last seven years by the opensource community, which makes me believe it's not going to be a simple solution) The only reason I left the comment was to point out the importance of this bug and maybe get it solved for other people. It has become irrelevant for me since OOo is completely off the table for us.
I think this IS a annoy issue for the users who have to open MS documents, and unfortunately, MS format document is used very widely. I don't think the issue should be set to OOo later.

The status now says 'started', is this really true? After 7 years watching this one, I hope it can be fixed soon. @tonyaker - I'm sorry to hear of your problems with OOo. We moved to it 3 years ago, and we get the odd moan and groan about it, but most staff are fairly happy with it. I have encountered this particular bug a few times, but not as many as I thought. If you're able to interchange docs as PDF, or as ODT, or change the original templates, OOo is much happier. If you always have to work just with MS type files, it will be harder for you ...
Andreas, please consider this highly voted issue for 3.3 or 3.4. Thanks a lot for your attention!
Unfortunately this feature is not easily to implement so I cant foresee when will achieved. Of course any volunteer will be welcome!
