Description klute 2003-05-24 13:55:17 UTC
My presentation uses Nimbus Sans L as its standand font. When printing the
presentation, all characters are replaced by some serif font. This happens when
printing to a Postscript and when exporting PDF. In OOo 1.0.3.1 everything was
fine. I did not check whether other screen fonts are replaced inappropriately, too.

If you export to PDF you can run pdffonts to get a list of the
fonts actually used by the file. I'm using mdk 9.0, which has the
.afm files in /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1.  I created a
subdirectory and put links to the .afm files there so I could add the
fonts using spadmin.

$ xlsfonts | grep 'urw-nimbus sans l-.*-iso8859-1$'
-urw-nimbus sans l-bold-o-condensed--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
-urw-nimbus sans l-bold-o-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
-urw-nimbus sans l-bold-r-condensed--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
-urw-nimbus sans l-bold-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
-urw-nimbus sans l-medium-o-condensed--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
-urw-nimbus sans l-medium-o-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
-urw-nimbus sans l-medium-r-condensed--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
-urw-nimbus sans l-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1

Here is what I get from a PDF file created by exporting
a drawing that uses only Nimbus Sans L (regular and italic). As you
can see, the Impact font has been substituted for both variants.

$ pdffonts nimbussansl.pdf
name type emb sub uni object ID
----------------- ------------ --- --- --- ---------
BAAAAA+Impact     TrueType     yes yes yes      9  0

In other documents I have seen different substitutions.

Hm, I don't have pdffonts installed and I really don't want to fiddle
around with it. All I expect is that OOo 1.1 behaves like 1.0.3. With
the latter I can print to a Postscript file and convert it to PDF
using Ghostscript (ps2pdf).

I could live with OOo being unable to export PDF directly but PS
printing should be as before. I have OOo 1.0.3 installed on the same
machine as 1.1beta2, which works flawlessly, so the problem is not a
font setup issue external to OOo.

I'll have a look
Comment 7 philipp.lohmann 2003-06-16 16:20:05 UTC
"Nimbus Sans L" is a Type1 fonts that was not found because the .afm
file next to it was not taken into account. This was fixed in issue 12936.

I'm aware of issue 12936. I have an afm subdirectory with symbolic
links to the actual afm files. This is needed in order to see the
fonts when you install them with spadmin. Did you install the URW
fonts with spadmin?

Comment 10 klute 2003-06-16 21:21:23 UTC
I did not install them at all, since they are available under Suse
Linux 8.2 (and earlier releases) right out of the box. If you need
more information, please tell me what exactly I should look up for you!
Comment 11 philipp.lohmann 2003-06-17 11:18:58 UTC
FYI: i rechecked with a current version and "Nimbus Sans L" works
flawlessly in PDF.

Thanks! I'll try the next beta when it is released.
