Description simonbr 2003-06-01 09:39:40 UTC
If no suitable JRE version is detected, and you select "do not use Java" you
get a warning that the online help will not run without JRE of at least 1.2.
However, if I continue installation anyway, the online help appears to run just
fine.
I have JRE 1.3.1 on my machine. I am aware of issue 14775, but this is not
about having the correct version of JRE, it is about choosing not to use it.

If the online help actually requires a JRE the install program should detect my
JRE 1.3.1 and suppress the warning. If it actually can run without a JRE, the
warning should be removed or corrected in any case.

The install program should be more clear about which functionality will not be
present if "do not use Java" is selected. One might think that this lack of
information is used to get people to install Sun's JRE even if they don't
actually need it to run OpenOffice.org. If providing more detailed information
could take this impression away that would be a good thing.

Hi Bettina,
I think enhanced information if 'no java' was selected at setup would
be helpfull. I don't see that we can get this right in time for 1.1. I
hope we get a better handling of java integration for 2.0.

Hello Ingo, I agree that we should give for information about at installation.
Would you please take this issue into your ownership? THank you.

In my opinion the setup is the wrong place to explain the user in detail which
functionality will not work, if Java is not selected. On the other hand it is
not clear yet how to handle the Java installation in StarOffice 8.
I wait for a Java specification.

according to the announcement on releases
(http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=releases&msgNo=7503) this issue
will be re-targeted to OOo Later.

I think that the installer should proceed in this way:

  - let the user choose modules for installation from all available modules
  - try to detect j2re
  - if j2re not detected or not selected all packages that depends
on the j2re should be listed in the dialog with question if he
wants to continue with installation of these modules even if he
hasn't j2re or if he wants to remove these modules from the
installation or if he wants to download & install j2re

The last thing is connected with the Issue #i21536#.
