Description ralphie 2003-06-03 10:56:45 UTC
Right now the font size menu on the toolbar has the following choices:
(Debian unoff. 1.1b2 packages, though I don't think they touched that)

6 7 8 9 10 10.5 11 12 13 14 15 16 18 20 22 24 26 28
32 36 40 44 48 54 60 66 72 80 88 96

Having less choices would make selection quicker (as would having
a menu dropping down all the way, see #15235) and would lead
to more consistent, aesthetically more pleasing documents for lazy users --
these sizes were so standard in lead type, most of them had a name of its
own. Proportions do matter.

Possible choice would be:

8 9 10 11 12 14 16 18 20 22 24 26 28 36 48 72 96

Note that the user can use the box next to the menu if he
or she wants another size (which will happen with larger
sizes most of the time anyway: 88pt -- please! -- fonts
like this have to be tuned for optical impression anyway,
or 96 is just close enough.

Alternatively you could add a "More..." or "Others..."
Choice.

even though I think this is a bit too minimalistic.

True to that. I hope the assigned person will look at this and suggest
to developers for the next release.

Unless I misunderstand, this is a request for enhancement. I agree with the idea
of having less in menus. I'm adding the "oooqa" keyword, setting this to New from
Unconfirmed, & setting this to Enhancement from Defect.

I agree that it would ease the selection of "meaningful" font sizes.

But not all users are aware that a manual entry is possible here, thus
seeing a limitation at first glance.

My experience tells me what at least some users will do when they
smell any sort of limitation: They cry out LOUD because they see "the
most important features of all crippeled". I am not kidding at all. It
is hard to meet the needs of Power-Users and Newbies alike. "Yet
another option" only piles up the existing problem of "Already too
many options in Tools-Options".

Note: Miccrosoft Word offers these:
8 9 10 10.5 11 12 14 16 18 20 22 24 26 28 36 48 72

My summary on this:
I vote for an implementation of an entry "more..." to get an intuitive
(= mouse-clickable... :-) way to "all" sizes.

Reassigned to Bettina.

I strongly agree. Standard font size "canon" has been established in the
sixteenth century and is based on the diatonic scale (thus, any combination of
sizes in the scale is looking good). The scale goes as follows:

(6 7) 8 9 10 11 12 14 16 18 21 24 36 48 60 72 ...

[Robert Bringhurst: The Elements of Typographic Style, p.45, ISBN 0-88179-132-6]

First two could be omitted as they are rarely used. If user really wants more
exotic font sizes (e.g. 10.5) they can always, as said, input them by hand.

I like more choices - I was not aware that you could type in the amount...
Comment 6 reveilles 2005-03-31 21:06:09 UTC
I use 10.5 as my default font. I'd prefer the MS Word font list, as I'd bet that
most users switching over to OpenOffice would probably expect such a font list.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
