Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 17604
Image resize should maintain aspect ratio when dragging corner handle.
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:38:26 UTC
Steps to reproduce: 1. import image 2. click on the image to select it (corner and middle resize handles appear) 3. drag the corner handle 4. distortion appears Current behaviour: When resizing an image by its corner or middle handles in the word processor ui, the image does not maintain the aspect ratio in either case. Expected behaviour: When resizing an image by the corner handles, the image should be resized keeping the aspect ratio (and not be distorted). When resizing an image by the middle handles, the image should be stretched / distorted in the direction that it is being dragged. The expected behaviour is the behaviour MS Office has. I consider the current OOo behaviour a defect because it is critical functionality. A lot of corporate large documents have images inserted which need to be manipulated in the ui, not in the properties of that image. This is a barrier to adoption by regular users. Lu
OD->lutimdale (30.07.2003): Try out holding the Shift-key during resizing and You will get Your proposed behaviour.
It's nice that it does that. However, even after trying to look for this in the documentation once I knew about it, I could not find it. The point is that the DEFAULT ACTION should be one that is the MOST USEFUL to the most people. Distorting an image or for that matter an object is not the most useful or relevant action... resizing while maintaining the aspect ratio is. The documentation should also be updated to reflect this.

Just because the functionality is there in OOo Writer via an obscure user interface tweak, does not mean this issue should be swept under the carpet and closed. One of the reasons MS Office including Word is successful is because they cater to the inexperienced average user, not a power user. I consider key-mouse combinations to be a power user task. I can see though that this is not a bug, it has simply never been looked at from an end-user perspective. This functionality should be present in an easy-to-use rich text editor. I reopened this case as an "enhancement" for "2.0". Surely, it should not be closed now. Again, the expected easy to use behaviour is: - the image corner handles should stretch the image keeping the aspect ratio (top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right) - the image middle handles should distort the image in the direction of the stretch and not keep the aspect ratio (top-center, bottom-center, left-middle, right-middle) Lu
SBA: Reassigned to Bettina from the User Experience team for consideration.
Hello Frank, I agree, we need a change here. Changing the default also concerns Draw and Impress. Please take over this one for OOo 2.0. Thank you.
has obviously been confirmed, there for set to new.
FL: Not realistic for OO.org 2.0 time frame. Set to "Office later" for OO.org > 2.0

As a possible short-term workaround, would it easy to pop up a tooltip when mousing over the corner handles to say something like "Hold down shift key while resizing to preserve aspect ratio"?

I know a lot of people complaining about this issue. It would be easy to fix or to implement a menu option. PLEASE fix it.
Followed the discussion here. I can only say i found 4 different errors in logical image handling in writer. I will post them separately not to interrupt this discussion. (drag image to another page crash, resize by percentage bug, no rotate option, no auto size when put inside tables) Image handling is a third of what you do in Writer, so after 3 seconds i noticed this user interface un-sexiness. Not having images resize proportionally by corner in a word processing program - is like Samsung putting a "circle O" on a DVD remote expecting everyone to know that icon means "Play |>" Like this on my remote....NOT Ill use shift meanwhile like a Cat on the keyboard..... thx for future fix, and don't just put a pop-up text box when the code already seems to be in there. So help me God i while learn Java myself and solve this after 3 years.
