Description capstone737 2003-08-22 02:36:34 UTC
I have a document that was created in Word97 and when it is opened in OOo, extra
bullet points are inserted in to the document. Also, page layout spacing is
somewhat different with text on the first page in Word97 ending some distance
from the end of the page, and in OOo it ends almost at the bottom of the page.
In addition, several blank lines have been inserted in the document text in the
OOo version.

Also, on page 4 (page 5 in OOo) there is a box drawn around:

"Next Meeting:
Tuesday 26 August at 8.30am, with Cara as the Heartstarter."

but in OOo it is not there.

I will include a copy of the document.

MRU->DVO: this is due to the more ore less (un)clear concept of
numberings/bullets in Redlines.

No chance to implement a reasonable solution for this until OO 2.0. Target "OO
later" now.

As to my knowledge quite a lot of people get the impression that importing a
bulleted Word document in OOo is crappy (and therefor do not use OOo!) I would
strongly suggest to solve this item and not postpone it!
Comment 14 henkfikkert 2004-10-08 13:14:11 UTC
Forgot to mention: I'm referencing closed Issue 34698. It should be mentioned as
a wordkaround that indeed all (?) problems are gone when the Document Change
buffer is flushed (by accepting or rejecting them) That makes the difference
between a working and a totally non-working solution (a lot of people using
Word, esp. in businesses are using Change Tracking) I would therfor suggest to
raise the priority to a P2, or provide an active workaround.
Comment 15 henkfikkert 2004-10-31 15:43:12 UTC
I once again want to stress the importance of solving this issue. I guess it's
not recognized as such, but this is a basic functionality as defined for priority P2
(Basic functionality is not working correctly) Please raise the error level P2.
It really should be solved. As stated: too many people trying to import from
Word get bad results due to this error and although I'm very enthousiastic about
OOo, I am not able to convince them. For them OOo sucks!

I don't know why it added that last comment from me. All I did was add myself
to the cc: list!
Comment 20 lephuonglieu 2005-02-04 21:34:20 UTC
Under WinXP version 5.1 build 2600 which has MS Word 2002 and OOo 1.1.4
installed, I can also reproduce this defect. There are extra bullet points
unacceptably at several places in the document in OOo 1.1.4. The page layout
spacing in OOo 1.1.4 is also unacceptably different from the text in MS Word
2002 version.
Comment 21 henkfikkert 2005-03-22 08:24:38 UTC
Due to this error I (and many others) are unable to use OOo in MSOffice (Word)
dominated environments. I regret it, but I have to leave OO, as the issue has
not been solved, nor an acceptable workaround been defined. Hoped it had been
included with the OOo 2 release, but I guess the OOo Later switch better be
read as OOo Never.

My issue that was closed as a duplicate is Issue 36878

It is not clear to me that these issues are related. However, let me express a
view about how tracked changes should work with bullets and numbering, since
someone above mentioned it was unclear.

The way tracked changes should work with bullets and numbering is exactly how it
should work with any other part of the document. That is, what was there before
should be marked as a deletion if it has changed and what is there now should be
marked as an addition if it wasn't there before.

If you add a new paragraph 2. B between these two:
1. A
2. C

it would become
1. A
2. B <- both of these marked as insertions
2^H3. C <- where ^H indicates strikethrough of 2 and 3 marked as an insertion

I agree totally with the various commenters about the importance of this issue.
It is probably the most significant reason for my apologising to MS Word users
when I send them an OOo document.

PS Could someone please change the summary or other header fields to include the
word "redline" so that people looking for problems relating to redlines have a
better chance of finding it?
