Description grsingleton 2003-08-22 22:27:41 UTC
Under XP-Home, XP-Pro and RH9, RC3 Impress disables insertion of sounds and/or video
Comment 1 grsingleton 2003-08-23 01:55:46 UTC
Perhaps this is not a critical bug against the code but rather against
HELP and the docs. I see that by double-clicking on certain effect
options that one can select sounds. This is not clear nor intuitive.
Comment 2 grsingleton 2003-08-23 03:00:31 UTC
Retested RC3 on RH9, found sounds available but "apply" not. Therefore
no sounds. Tried various combinations on a know good .ppt and no
apply. Tried again on the same presentation as an .sxi with the same
results, no apply.

Re-tried under XP, favorites and others. Same as under rh9. Usually no
apply button; however, the odd time it did show up but no sound.
Comment 3 andreschnabel 2003-08-24 10:34:15 UTC
grsingleton:
Can you provide some more information, what you are trying to do?
pleas give a step-by-step description of menus and dialogues you are
using.

Im not shure, if you like to insert sounds / videos by "insert -
object" or try to define a sound for an effect.

While the 1st seems to be broken for me too, the latter works.
Comment 4 grsingleton 2003-08-24 15:35:26 UTC
1. Open an existing .ppt
2. Open Slide Show menu item
3. Select Effects
4. choose fade (say favourite/ from centre)
5. Select sound icon
6. Choose sound from list.
7. No sound on preview or show.

Both XP and RH9

Did not try insert as it is not what I would do in PowerPoint or SO.

Since you are here, I need evaluation of another possible bug with
install. RC3 will not install without java. Ever heard of this? If yes
please give me the issue # and if not I'll open a new issue.
Comment 5 andreschnabel 2003-08-24 17:16:53 UTC
Ok, exactly following your steps, will not work (I'll get no sound).
But there is a button "assign" at the upper right in the effect's
dialoque. If I push this, all is ok. Can you get it working?

There are some favourites, where this button is not enabled .. but
this seems to be another issue.

To the java-issue: I find no relatet issue and actually I am able to
install 1.1RC3 without Java (Win2k). Please file a new issue or ask at
the user-lista
Comment 6 grsingleton 2003-08-24 17:30:21 UTC
My complaint is the "assign" never becomes active. To me this is a
breaker.

About favorites, it seems that they are assigned sounds but in older
versions one could override the default. If you can't assign, impress
is useless, IMHO.
Comment 7 andreschnabel 2003-08-24 20:51:41 UTC
In my environment, "assign" is active in all relevant cases. It
becomes inactive, if I try to assign a text effect to a non-text object.

can you attach the presentation you are trying to change?

If this does not help, I'm going to ask another volunteer at qa-list
to confirm. But it was a good Idee, you ask at users-list, if someone
has the same problem. (I cannot do this, because I only read the
german user list).

Comment 11 andreschnabel 2003-08-25 11:44:31 UTC
it all works fine for me, so I cannot confirm.
I'll ask at the qa-list for help. Pleas ask at user-list, if someone
has the same problem.

If this cannot be confirmed, I'm going to close with "works for me"
within two weeks.
Comment 12 wolframgarten 2003-08-25 12:27:43 UTC
I think here are two things gettin mixed up. When you open a
presentation, select nothing and open the Slideshow/effects menu there
will be no option to assign an effect: because this dialog is for
object effects (flying rectangles, text, etc.). For getting an effect
on the complete slide just use the other dialog Slideshow/Slide
transition. This will get an effect to the slide changing. Did I miss
something or am I right? Hope this helps.
Comment 13 grsingleton 2003-08-25 13:16:10 UTC
I not certain I understand. If I want to enable effects or change them
for a presentation, it seems the logical place is under "Slide
Show/Effects" When creating a presentation, that is another story and
one that I am not addressing. In SO5.2, Powerpoint and ealier versions
of OO.org, one could modify an existing presentation to tailor it for
the particular audience. Under rc3, this is not possible as I have
described. To me this is a stopper. So what to do, may I suggest that
you explain to me exactly what you mean to terms of steps to take
(privately might be good) to test. I will do this and update my
finding in this issue quickly so as to assist in getting 1.1 ready for
release.
Comment 14 wolframgarten 2003-08-25 14:08:28 UTC
It differs what effects you want to change:
if you want to change slide effects (effects that take place when the
slide is changed in the running presentation) you have to use
Slideshow/Slide Transition to change the Slide Transition effect.
If you want to change Object Effects (effects on single text or grafic
objects on a slide) you have to select the object whose effect you
want to change and use SlideShow/Effects.
In your step by step description given earlier on you are using the
effects dialog (this one is for changing object effects) but without
having selected anything. So it is correct that you cannot apply your
changes there. But this has been in the same way in older OO-versions,
too.
Comment 15 grsingleton 2003-08-25 14:38:09 UTC
Huh? You mean that when I go to Slide Show/effects I am attempting to
change only one object within the frame? This is NOT clear. The
options offered show the various slide transitions that one may use
and not the transitions of an object within the slide. All I want to
do is overrided favorites/no fade to favorites/fade to center and to
change the sound.
Unfortunately the apply button does not become enabled thus no change.

Either it's a document/label bug or a coding bug and it affects
impress' utility when trying to customize presentations. All work is
in SLide mode which should select the slide being changed, Yes/no?

In older versions slide view mode permitted changes to defaults. Why
not OO.org?
Comment 16 wolframgarten 2003-08-25 14:49:56 UTC
Reassigned to Christian. Please have a look if you can give a better
description of the difference between SlideEffect/ObjectEffect. It
seems that I am not able to.
Comment 17 grsingleton 2003-08-25 15:33:22 UTC
I look forward to addressing the problem.
Comment 18 andreschnabel 2003-08-25 15:43:01 UTC
IMHO, this is a usability / wording problem, not an defect.

So we should change to enhancement and change the Summary or close
with "invalid".

BTW: OOo 1.0.3 shows exactly the same behaviour.
Comment 19 grsingleton 2003-08-25 16:02:51 UTC
Perhaps. I can accept that the instructions are not up to standard.
Can we still pursue this in some manner?
Comment 20 christian.guenther 2003-10-20 15:23:15 UTC
The slide transition effect is the effect of the slide. this effect
act on the slide with all texts and objects which doesn't have an
'own' effect. You can assign the effect with 'Slide Show/Slide
Transition'. After the Slide transition the objects and the text
effects appears. You assign the effects with 'Slide Show/Effects'.
There are buttons in the corresponding dialogs (Slide Transitio or
Effects) to assign also a sound effect.
If the help about this area is confusing please write me what is
confusing and I send the issue to our documentation team.
Comment 21 christian.guenther 2003-11-04 10:25:15 UTC
I can't reproduce the bug and don't get an answer to my comment above.
Therefore I close this issue.
Comment 22 grsingleton 2003-11-04 13:35:18 UTC
Is it really up to me to correct the documentation and help? We all
know that it is lacking. I still feel that being able to control sound
insertion under ALL conditions is imperative. With 1.1.0Final the
problem remains. This issue should NOT be closed on such a specious
whim. THe comment required no answer because it is obvious. If you
wish to maintain the state of OOo WRT sounds, please do so but also do
the followup that jusifies your decision. In other words, you feel
that insertions of sounds should remain the same and the docs do NOT
reflect your decision fix the docs. Only when you have done a complete
and thorough job should you close issues.
Comment 23 christian.guenther 2003-11-04 14:31:20 UTC
You are right our effect dialogs needs improvement.

Hi Bettina
Please have a look how we can improve our effect dialogs.
