Description Unknown 2003-08-31 19:16:37 UTC
I'm using SuSE 8.1 with a UMAX S-6EG. Other scanner applications like xsane,
gimp etc work fine. When trying to insert grafics in OO1.1.0 RC3 I can setup the
scanner and even do a preview but when trying to scan the image the whole
application GUI is freezed and can only be killed with xkill. After doing this
OO cannot be started again unless rebooting the whole PC.

Jack,

Does this mean that it is fixed in RC4 ? I think not. I've seen at
least two other reports of the same behaviour in RC4 Linux, I have it
in RC1 Linux, and all with various scanners, not just HP. There are at
least 10 different issues that have been opened on this and none of
them appear to have been addressed.

I'm confirming and setting oooqa tag.

so, now i can reproduce this issue under certain circumstances.
it doe's not allways occur on my system, just after starting the pc
with a power on. but then the office consumes lot of system memory and
cpu time and has not function anymore, after closing the prozess i
could not reopen the application, if i restart the system i could scan
here, it tooks a lot time to see the scan in office after the scan
finished (nearly 10 minutes with 1200dpi and 7 minutes with 600 dpi)
but i had no crash.
i will do further testing and try it on different systems.
my scanner is a scasi scaner conected to an adaptec 2940U adapter.

what i need to know are your scaner connections
(scsi/usb/paralell) to see if this is just a problem with scsi
connected scaner and/or a single adapter type.

Mine is a HP G85 Officejet, connected over a parallel port under Linux
Mandrake 9.1. It uses the ptal module developed by HP and included in
the Linux distribution.

after testing scanning with some different scanners, we got a
reproduceable behaviour.
the time from scanning to the moment office shows the graphic can be
between 10 and 20 minutes, in this time OOo does not react and
consumes a lot of memory (up to 500mb) and cpu time (50% to 96%).

we could reproduce this behaviour with usb and scsi scanners. with
scan resolutions from 300 to 1200 dpi. and colour scanning.

other applications on the same system scanning work quickly and less
memory and cpu consuming.

sometimes not very often and not clearly reproduceable, we got the
described behaviour, that the whole system looked and the pc had to be
resetted.

a statusbar showing the scanprocess is missing too.

changed version to OOo 1.1

Mine is HP PSC 1200 (multi scanner, printer...) connected to usb and this only
happen with writer (with oo draw it works fine), as u can see here:

This is by no means a Linux-only problem. I can't scan into Writer or Draw,
either. I am running WinXP Home on a 1.5 GHz P4, 256 MB ram. Scanner is and
older Acer 620U (usb). Scan -> Select Source simply does nothing. Scan ->
Request brings up the Mirascan UI. It indicates that it is going to send the
output to OOo. I can do the preview, but the Mirascan UI locks up when I hit
"scan". I have to kill it with the Task Manager. This also takes down OOo.

This happens with 1.1.3 and also with m56. m56 also exhibits a race condition
when I kill the scanner UI with TM, consuming 100% of CPU until I finally kill
it with TM as well.
