Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 19882
Word Import: incorrect footer size
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:41:36 UTC
The MS word document I'm about to attach displays all wrong in OOo. Page contents are all right, headers and footers are not.
Created attachment 9556 [details] MS word file (real, confidential contents removed)
Created attachment 9557 [details] Screen-shot of doc displayed in MS Word 2000
I can Reproduce the problem on OpenOffice 1.1 RC4(default Install, US), Win XP Pro Sp1. (And MS Office XP Sp2). It is real problem The header is not displayed at all in page1, and displayed partly in page 2 and the side text is displayed inside the line, instead of outside. Footer also have problem.
reassigned to mru set target to office later can you please take a look at this issue
MRU->SJ: The graphic on top of page one does not have content.
Other, not immediately obvious problems with this doc: 1. Outline numbering setup has Follow number with: Tab character this is not imported into OOo. In fact, I can't even find a way to insert tabs after outline numbers in OOo ("special character" popup doesn't help a lot.) 2. Margins aren't read correctly.
Regarding the margins, the top and bottom one would appear to be incorrect. However, closer inspection reveals that: 1) MS Word has two settings for each of top and bottom; the margin itself and "space to header" or "space to footer". OOo will NOT read the top marging, but use "space to header" instead, and similar for the bottom. Perhaps that's the closest approximation after all. 2) There may be another reason why the spacing doesn't look right: The footer is actually smaller in OOo than MS Word, the reason being that word will add some space below the text in the table where OOo doesn't.
Ah. I see. MS Word will apply "space below paragraph" setting even inside tables, but OOo won't.
I can confirm having similar problems with headers in OpenOffice1.1preX and final. What might be interesting is that these word documents load OK in OpenOffice1.0.3 Please email me if you would need some samples.
utomo> Tomasz Motylewski: Please attach the file in this issuezilla, so the developer have more documents for testing. and I hope we can reduce a lot of ms_interoperability in 1.1.1 if possible. Thanks
accepted.
Sorry if I am commenting in the wrong place. I have just installed OpenOffice 1.1.0 on Windows XP and have experienced this exact same problem. I loaded some documents created in Word (I have Office 2003 installed) and the header is mostly not visible. Very impressed though in general so far with OpenOffice.
SJ->CMC: I am currently scanning my bugs to determine if I am able to fix them for the corresponding OOo2.0 target or not. As I have too many other bugs and I don't have much experience with header/footer objects I am in favor to set the target OO Later. Because I'm also not sure if this bug has to be fixed by me or if it is a pure Writer Issue I hand over the Issue to your team, possible you can figure out some more information.
retitling to key problem
Created attachment 12836 [details] The png that doesn't loaded in writer, but does in word
cmc->sj: Attached now is the png which works in word but not in writer, this sounds a little familiar to another problem in the past. This is the key problem of this document of the graphic in the header, its not actually word header/footer specific. cmc->everyone else: We must remain focused with issues or we end up with sprawling ever rolling issues which can never be completed if something new keeps getting added to the single issue submission. So here we will tackle the original and most obvious problem, that the graphic is missing. The layout issues about misplacement and so on are generally known problems which are being tackled in writer with new anchoring positioning options, and new features to allow behaviour more like word. The issue about spacing below paragraphs inside tables is also known and being handled seperately, the issue about tabs inside numbering is also known and being handled seperately. The margins are generally ok, just that the UIs in word and writer work in different ways, they do add up to the same values in both applications. Clearly I can't have a single bug-report to handle all of these things, the above pretty much sums up all the the things we are trying to do in writer from version 1.0 to version 2.0 :-), so we'll stick with the primary issue of a png which works in word but not in writer, and if you feel that you still want to submit the other seperate problems as new seperate bugs, go ahead, but don't be surprised if they are marked as duplicate of other existing per-feature/problem issues.
Actually, the missing graphics is not the most serious problem here. The main issue is the vertical text frame. In MS Word this is displayed outside the text frame (the copyright notice.) In OOo it is displayed inside *and* counted when calculating the footer size, so that the footer will cover about half the page.
Oh. Well. I guess I didn't read the comments closely enough. Reverting subject. However, I still think the layout is the main issue here; I don't really care too much about some missing graphics. Are there separate reports for the layout problems?
See issue 24135 for problems with objects originally anchored in headers/footers and how they affect layout. There are similiar issues also assigned to od@openoffice.org which relate to this area, on first viewing they might appear to be different, but taken together they cover the general problems and enhanchments required to get the other parts of this bugdoc working.
SJ->CMC: First I must thank you that you get out the png problem. SJ->TORALF: I have added the png problem to Issue 9935, so this Issue can be used now to focus on the incorrect footer size. Therefore I changed the title. SJ->CMC: This Issue goes now to you.
cmc: I'll handle the different line spacing in the "Header" style with issue 25319 cmc->od: Ignoring the missing content in the graphic in the header and the extra linespacing for the "Header" style, I think this looks like a mix of the problems you are looking into. 1: A frame anchored inside a table inside a footer which escapes the footer on page 1, fixed in objpos workspaces ? 2: A graphic as character inside a header on page 2 where the header shrinks the graphics size to the minimum
Created attachment 13042 [details] Another example someone sent me
Description of last attachment - and I quote > Here is an example - it displays correctly in Word 2000 and was also imported > correctly in OpenOffice 1.0.3. But the image in the header is compressed > vertically in OpenOffice 1.1 > You have a BSD-type nonattributive licence to copy and process this file.
OD->MRU: Regarding CMC's comment given above at 10th Feb. all the problems concerning objects in header/footer are fixed in SRC680m26. Please verify and close with issue.
Yeah, the main problems are all fixed in current snapshot 680m28.
Closed as fixed.
