Functionality

Product Requirement
Calc should provide functions that allow to access database fields and meta data
in the spreadsheet. Currently no update access is possible for Spreadsheets.
Customers need write access . The contents of the spreadsheet documents cannot
be edited within the data source connection. Importing data from other
applications

Customer Need/Problem
Extend the functionality of the existing database functions that use spreadsheet
data instead of a real database today. The benefit is that the users can create
some kind of 'light reports' by just using the functions to get the data and
then apply the Calc calculations mechanisms. This would be similar to the stock
quote demo that was shown at LinuxWorld by Frank G. Need to make it possible to
import data from Spreadsheet rather than just accessing via data source.

Product Concept
The preferred way to do spreadsheet calculations on data from a database is to
import the data into a database range in the spreadsheet. That way the possibly
time-consuming database operation is decoupled from the spreadsheet
calculations, as several formulas can use the same database range, and the user
can manually refresh the range, repeating the database operation. If it is
really necessary to do such calculations without the use of a database range, we
could implement an add-in function like those available for other spreadsheets.
This function would have to execute the database query every time the cell that
contains the formula is recalculated. A read/write data source for spreadsheet
documents is possible, but would inevitably lead to problems where the database
values are the result of some conversion (formula results, or number-to-text).
If these cells were also modifiable, it would be easy to inadvertently lose
information in the spreadsheet. The availability of spreadsheets as read/write
data source might also lead users to using spreadsheets where databases would be
more suitable, causing problems later. If we accept these problems, we can
implement the read/write access. Importing spreadsheet data into a database is
already possible via drag&drop of a cell range onto a 'Tables' entry in the Data
Sources window. Given the low priority and potential problems, nothing will be
changed for 'Q'.

according to the announcement on releases
(http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=releases&msgNo=7503) this issue
will be re-targeted to OOo Later.
