Q-PCD Database-16: backup/restore database files
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:45:02 UTC
Source Customer feedback Category DataSources Product Requirement Import/Export of data sources to easily configure database installation. Customer Need/Problem Currently there is no way to transfer data source definitions from one system/installation to another. This was available in SO 5.2 and in 6.0 you have to re-define the data source in every installation. Comment - Eng Effort - Eng Owner Frank Schoenheit Product Concept The item in it's original form is obsolete: With OpenOffice.org Q, we will re-introduce file-based databases, where a database file contains evrything except the actual data. So, there will be a way to transfer data source definitions to other machines, by simply copying the respective file. However, there's a new problem immediaely, which is also transfering the data, which is not contained in the database file. We will thus offer a simple backup-and-restore feature for some database types (most notably for the simple types such as dBase and Text), where the complete data, together with the original database file, is put together. This can be done in an export process in one installation, and the resulting file can be imported in another installation. We will not offer, at least not in the 2.0 timeframe, real replication or synchronization functionality, nor will we support cross-database backup/restore. This means that you cannot export from, say, MySQL, and import in PostgreSQL. This would be way too complex to be solved in the given time frame. Functional Specification

change subcomponent to 'none'
adjusting summary to better reflect what's left from the original idea
targeting to Later in agreement with DL - after the conceptual change to have an own file format, there's not much left which is worth implementing, weighting the effort against other important projects.
