Description bjfowler 2003-10-19 13:00:23 UTC
I have a main computer, bluebottle with two users, bjfowler and guest. Open
Office 1.1.0 is installed using the -net option. On the local console, Open
Office works perfectly satisfactorily for both users. The setup in the $HOME
directories is correct for both users.

When I log on remotely into bluebottle from my other computer, eccles, which is
set up as a remote X terminal, Open Office loads OK, but the display of menu
entries on the eccles' screen is very slow. This applies especially for Writer's
'File' menu, but is noticeable for all other menus in all other applications.
Other operations like selecting a file to open or save from the list box work OK.

According to xosview, about 50% of the RAM (256M) of bluebottle is available as
cache or free. Eccles has 128 MB RAM, with 16 MB being used by the X server, and
with about 90% free CPU cycles. These figures imply that the fault is not due
to lack of computing power.

Other programs such as mozilla display their menus at a satisfactory speed, so
the network is not adequate (100 Mbs Ethernet)

The last paragraph in the original description had an error; the
network _is_ adequate. The 'not' was an error.

I believe this issue to be serious because the networking capabilities
of OO is one of its greatest advanges over MS Office. I wish to
demonstrate this system to a friend in the next few days, and he will
be unimpressed by the sluggishness of the menu display.

The same fault occurs in OO 1.1 rc1

Need more information about the Linux - version, mashine type and
speed, OOo1.1 version (RC) and about the situation when the remote
computer trys to login (is a local user already logged in ?,....).
Comment 4 bjfowler 2003-10-23 09:52:09 UTC
Addendum from initial reporter:

The X terminal on which I reported sluggish operation was running Red
Hat 7.0. with XF86 version 3.3.6. For various reasons, including
wishing to run XF86 version 4 +, I replaced the RH distro with SuSE
7.3 (the X terminal is a 1998 200 MHz box). According to the list of
installed rpms, the XF86 version is 4.1.0.

The menus now display properly.

It seems that fault lies with the use of old XFree86 servers. With
recycled boxes running as X terminals, which work better with old
distros, it is likely that the 3.3.x versions of XF86 may be
installed, and the fault may turn up again.

TM->PL: Please have a look, thanks !
Comment 6 philipp.lohmann 2003-12-15 09:10:40 UTC
pl->hdu: The difference is obviously RENDER, so i guess unless you want to speed
up the pure X antialiasing stuff this is a wontfix.
Comment 7 2003-12-15 09:15:13 UTC
Does it speed up when you disable the checkbox in the menue dialog
Tools -> Options -> StarOffice -> View -> ScreenFontAntialiasing?
Comment 8 2004-01-12 16:45:40 UTC
Stalled for answer to the question in the previous comment. Reassigning.

OOo menus have always been a little 'slow' for Xterminals, though for me not
too slow to be considered a fault.
If people out there are using LTSP (Linux Terminal Server), note that LTSP
uses NFS for serving fonts as files and having the local X server render the
fonts, rather than the more speedy xfs (X Font Server).
Here are a couple of helps:
uncheck "Show icons in menus" and "Preview in fonts lists"
