Description alex.thurgood 2003-10-31 14:34:43 UTC
Hi,

I've just installed the 680m11 on my Linux MDK 9.1.
Firstly, congrats to all on the speed of launch, very impressive.

Now to my problem/observation.

After a net, then user installation, I launched OOo as the user. The basic
initial screen came up OK. I decided to configure OOo from the start to avoid
having to do it later, so I went to Tools - Options and the general config
dialog came up. I noticed that the dialogs for the main modules (Writer, Calc,
Draw, Impress) were absent.

However, if I create a new document from scratch using File - New - Text
document, I can then access the configuration settings for Text Documents. The
same behaviour could be observed for Calc, Draw, and Impress. The general
configuration dialogs only appear in the Tools - Options dialog if the modules
have been launched at least once. I consider this to be a defect, since I can
not now set the general configuration of all the modules at first start.

ANy ideas ?

Setting oooqa keyword later once the issue is registered.

Alex

Adding oooqa keyword

This is a new feature for OOo 2.0. Only the options that belong to the
application should be shown. You can see all options when you have no
document open.
It is not a defect but a new feature. Therefor i set this as 'invalid'.

So if I've understood correctly, what you're saying is that you only
get access to the configuration options of the application you happen
to have open at any given time ? So what happens when you want to
configure, as you can do now with 1.1.0, everything before actually
starting any of the individual modules ?

From what you've said, it sounds like it is now impossible to do this.
In my opinion this is a regression. I can understand there only being
access to individual module configuration if only those modules are
installed (as a choice made at installation time), but surely if you
install all of the modules (which is the default anyway), then there
must be some way of setting the config properties for each module
without having to launch each one first ? If there isn't, then I
consider this "feature" to be a regression on the current state of
affairs, and hence a bug.

Also, if the behaviour you now state as a "feature" is normal, why
then, when you open a new drawing document, do you get access to both
the drawing configuration dialog AND the presentation dialog ? This
doesn't follow from your statement, since I should only get the
drawing configuration options dialog ? Similarly, when you create a
new HTML document from the menu, you get the text document
configuration options AND the HTML configuration options ? Again this
doesn't follow logically from your statement.

I'm reopening the question.

Hi Alex,

please have a look at the spec:
http://specs.openoffice.org/appwide/separate_modules/OptionsDialog.sxw

Basically we change this to reduce complexity and to separate the
modules from each other. Some obstacles are still present and cant be
fixed with one step. E.g. you have pointed out the Writer and
Writer/Web options visible at the same time. On the other hand Draw
and Impress active at the same time is a bug - or lets say - not
implemented yet. Note, the spec is still in draft status.

hope this helps
Matthias

THanks Mathias,

I noticed that the main point I mentioned, i.e. being able to have the
complete list of options dialogs for all modules with just the backing
window is not possible yet, because the modules aren't all loaded at
application start. I imagine that this was done to speed up loading
and thereby reduce start times. To me, this means that we have
sacrificed flexibility and ease of use for speed. Also, there is no
mention of when the possibility to have all options dialogs with just
the backing window will be implemented. Although it is not
specifically stated in the spec document you pointed me to, I get the
feeling that this feature will not be present in OOo2.0.

My question is thus the following : was this design feature decided by
the Community Council or was it taken internally by Sun, or was there
some other form of debate (on the lists perhaps) that I may have missed ?

TIA,

Alex

Hi Alex,
this is a first step to separate the OOo modules as outlined in the
product concept document (published at
http://tools.openoffice.org/releases/index.html). I do not remember
any discussion on _this_ point. But the PCD has been announced and was
discussed in the ooo lists -- ie openoffice.dev newsgroup.

On your point concerning the trade off between speed and ease of use:
Maybe we find a way to display all options while in backing window
state. But I do not want to offer all panels if the options dlg is
called from a module. It is faster and easier to use to choose from a
smaller set of option panels.
cheers,
Matthias
