Description utomo99 2003-11-05 07:09:57 UTC
Editing hyperlink in OOo is difficult

The Easiest solutions is add right click menu "hyperlink dialog" and open the
existing hyperlink Dialog.

I believe it is not difficult to implemented, but make user much more easier to
use OOo to edit hyperlink. If it is not difficult, please try at 1.1.1 I believe
user will love OOo more

Hyperlink in right click function of word
Comment 2 utomo99 2003-11-05 07:19:32 UTC
Existing hyperlink Dialog is available in Toolbar, so it just link it
to that function.

Now many people are typing url, so if editing hyperlink is difficult
or make them facing many wrong step to do it, user will not so happy
with OOo. but using this common and easy solutions will make user easier.

SBA: This is not a defect. Type changed to "Enhancement". Reassigned
to Bettina.
Comment 4 graaf 2004-09-01 21:43:55 UTC
I strongly agree with utomo99. This behavior is really a nuissance and hasn't
been fixed yet in 2.0 prerelease (1.9m51). I tried to browse the specs, but
didn't found nothing relevant.

It could be possible to incorporate "remove hyperlink" (as in MSO) to this right
click menu as well: currently deleting a hyperlink is almost impossible as
Hyperlink dialog does not have this option and entering empty string as Target
is not working either (doesn't change the link at all)

Further discussion on this topic:

I would like this issue to be addressed as well. When writing documents, I need
to be careful entering email address or http links because then I know I will
need to do so many steps just to remove the link formatting around the text.

Adding a remove link to the context menu will really help alot when using

thanks, -Emilio

Comment 8 kpalagin 2007-05-03 14:55:25 UTC
by fl in Issue 56710:

"The new Security tab page in OOo 2.0 does not allow to define the hyperlink
handling anymore. The replacement for this, already planned for OOo 2.0, has
been implemented due to lack of resources. For OOo 3.0 we have to re-consider
the handling of hyperlinks (in and external) for all apps.

Link to OOo 2.0 spec:

"Normal Writer Edit Mode Behavior

A tip help is shown (see string table below for details) when the mouse is
placed on a URL. If the CTRL key is pressed, the i-beam cursor changes to a
finger cursor and a click on the link opens the URL in the system's browser.

String list
'<URL> CTRL+click to follow link'
'<URL> Strg+Klick zum Verfolgen der Verknüpfung'

If target is not within the current document.
The URL tip help is limited to a width of 45 characters, because URLs could
become very long.""

We will change the hyperlink beahvior with the follwoing new feature CWS. Please
find the specification here:
Comment 10 utomo99 2007-05-27 06:00:41 UTC
is that correct that we will not have improvements on hyperlink handling on
OOo 2.x ?
Comment 11 matthias.mueller-prove 2007-07-05 11:55:44 UTC
adding spec URL to URL field.

Michael, please note, that the strings are not implemented as specified (Section
1.4); SRC680/smarttags3

MRU->MMP: please do not "mutate" issue. Here, it is requested to have an "Edit
Hyperlink" entry in the Context menu.
The wrong Strings have been handled by FME via a different issue.

Please reassign this RFE to a correct person in your team. Thank you very much!
Comment 13 matthias.mueller-prove 2007-07-20 09:52:02 UTC
Well, the summary says both
1) Editing Hyperlink is too difficult;
2) add context menu entry

And the description refers to a discussion that is no longer available:

So what is the point?
ad 1) Editing hyperlinks has been eased for OOo2.3 by making it possible to
select a hyperlink with a mouse click (rather than triggering the browser). If
the user then clicks the Hyperlink control in the toolbar she gets all options
OOo offers to edit the hyperlink.
ad 2) True, we still do not have a context menu entry to call the Hyperlink dialog.

BTW there is also issue 7311, with the request to remove hyperlinks with the
hyperlink dialog

Maybe we ask Utomo if he still recommends to implement a context menu item to
open the hypelink dialog. Is this the essence of the issue?
Comment 14 matthias.mueller-prove 2007-07-20 10:01:48 UTC
Competitive Analysis
MSWord XP offers for non-hyperlink text the context menu items:
1) Hyperlink... to open the Hyperlink dialog

For hyperlinks it offers the context menu items:
1) Edit Hyperlink...
2) Select Hyperlink
3) Open Hyperlink
4) Copy Hyperlink
5) Remove Hyperlink

In my opinion 1 and 5 are essential.
However, if we do something here we have to make sure that we do not interfere
with the spellchecking context menu.
Comment 15 michael.ruess 2007-08-14 13:38:44 UTC
IMO, assigning an RFE issue back to the submitter is not a good issue handling...
Comment 16 frank.loehmann 2007-09-05 17:21:33 UTC
Set target to OO later.
Comment 17 canis 2008-04-17 11:20:20 UTC
So many time slipped by this issue was created. It seems to be not very
difficult but very usefull. Any chances for nearest release?
Comment 18 frank.loehmann 2008-04-17 13:08:42 UTC
I will give it a try for OOo 3.x.
Comment 19 Oliver Specht 2008-11-08 08:40:49 UTC
There is issue 9479 that cares about the hyperlink dialog and issue 7311 that is
about the dialog. Closing this one a duplicate.

The problem is solved for WRITER (Issue 7311), but it's not for CALC, DRAW,
IMPRESS (pls. see attached screenshots). This inconsistence is worrying.

Almost one year, a major upgrade (3.3) later and the "feature" is still there...
This is becoming embarrassing.
Comment 25 Rainer Bielefeld 2014-05-15 15:27:46 UTC
More or less an ENHANCEMENT, but because of inconsistence with Writer I still consider this one a Bug

Anywhere the context menu only is useful if it allows to edit the hyperlink without starting Edit mode for Cell, Textbox, whatever.

Latest confirmation for AOO4.0.1 before 4.1.0 release, but because of
incomplete Version selector (Bug 123063) no correct information
  can be contributed.
