Description antonbijl 2003-11-06 07:46:20 UTC
When inserting a date field in either the header or footer of a spreadsheet,
the default OOo format MM/DD/YYYY is used. No regard is taken of the locale
setting on either the operating system or in the OOo options. There also
appears to be no way of inserting the date in a different format, since none of
the standard menus can be used when the header edit dialog is open. Right-
clicking on the field in the header edit dialog does nothing.

Ideally, the default format should be used should be taken from the locale
setting. As a second best option, the standard Insert > Fields menu should be
available in this dialog. As a last resort it should at least be possible to
edit the format that the date is presented in after inserting it.

Works for me. When I change the locale language, the header date
format changes correctly.

works for me too.

Check your settings under Tools-Options-Language Settings. If they are
set to default, the system locale is used. If not, the choosen locale
setting is used.

Thanks guys. Having now tested it with other locales I agree. The
real issue here is actually that the date format on the OOo South
African locale is MM/DD/YYYY when the actual standard in South Africa
is YYYY/MM/DD (but a lot of people also use DD/MM/YYYY). I will log
this as a separate issue.

Reopening this issue because if I create a new one someone will mark it as a
duplicate because it will have the same subject.
But what the subject actually says (Cannot change date format in
header/footer) is still not fixed.
You can only have the format that the locale is set to - but sometimes you
what another format than that - and there are more locale formats than just
one (both a short and a long version).
For time you also sometimes just need HH:MM.
And then there are the ISO date format YYYY-MM-DD - which should always be
available - let's make OOo the standard compliant office suite - not only when
it comes to document formats but everywhere when possible.

I just tried this in version 3.0 and you still can't change the date format in

I too would like to standardise on ISO standard date formats.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".

I just tried this in 3.2.0 under linux, and was able to create a custom field
style YYYY-MM-DD-ddd and insert it in a footer.

First I added the field, and got the locale default, then right clicked on it
and selected 'fields' and was able to modify the field format.

Does that mean this is fixed?

The original issue was for spreadsheets, and I am still unable to format dates
in header or footer (right click does nothing). I think bobharvey was looking at
writer perhaps.

As an American (Locale = English) living in Germany, this is a pretty serious
issue for me. I cannot make the Spreadsheet footer's date something that Germans
will understand (and I don't want to set my locale to German).

The date in headers and footers in OOo Writer can be formatted, or rather,
added as fields. Surely, for consistency, Calc and Writer should use the same
facilities and procedure for setting the date format.
