Description faught 2003-11-25 23:23:02 UTC
1) Create a new spreadsheet.
2) Insert one or more characters into a cell and press enter.
3) Single-click on the same cell and type a different character - the original
contents are erased and replaced with the new character.
4) Decide you want the original contents instead - click Undo. The new
character is erased and the cell is blank.
5) Try to click Undo again, but the feature is disabled. Panic. The original
text is not restored.

I frequently will do this when trying to do a find and pressing Ctrl and F in
the wrong order, thus typing into a cell I didn't intend to change. It took a
while to discover the workaround:

6) Move to a different cell and click Undo, or press Esc. The original contents
are restored.

The fact that Undo partially does the job and then says you can't undo any
further was very confusing to me. This behavior is not mentioned in the help text.

this is not a bug.

the undo works for the instance you've used, in this case the edit
engine. So doing an undo results in an active edit engine with no
content. if you close the cell and therefore the edit engine, an undo
will restore the cell content.

Nevertheless, I think we should consider the last undo of the edit
engine to close it and restore the original content of the cell. So I
re-flag this Issue from defect to enhancement and assign it to the
feature group.

As a user, I wasn't thinking of edit engines, only the fact that my
data seemed to be irrevocably deleted. I don't recall any mention of
edit engines in the help text.

Microsoft Word's behavior in this case is much more reasonable.

A better comprehensible behaviour is visible in competitors
spreadsheet: it shows, that after rewriting of the cell content (still
in editmode) the former content is restored directly by doing the undo.
We are splitting into two steps (closing the cell and then resetting
the focus is needed) for an executed undo. That is not intuitive.
Hello Niklas, please give approval for this evaluated OO.o 2.0 flagged
If you confirm with the target OO.o 2.0, then please keep it on your
owner (or the owner of the concerning developer) for implementation.
In case you want this issue for 'OOo Later', then please reset the
target milestone. If you decline the issue finally, please set the
resolution to 'Wontfix' (but do not close). In case of 'OOo Later' or
'Wontfix' please reset it on Bettina's owner. Thank you.

I should have said Excel rather than Word in my previous comment.
Comment 5 niklas.nebel 2004-01-26 11:23:18 UTC
This is not on the list of features that we're going to do for 2.0. We need to
focus on the enhancements from the PCD document.
