Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 23075
Tabs lost with negative first-line indent
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:38:26 UTC
I want a paragraph to be indented one inch and to start on the same line as a one-word heading. In the Indents and Spacing tab of the Paragraph box, I set "Before Text" to 1.00in and "First Line" to -1.00. I then add a tab stop at 1.00 inches in the Tabs tab. Now I can type "Heading <tab> This is the long paragraph..." and it does what I want. If I don't want a heading, I just put a tab before a paragraph, and the entire paragraph is indented 1 inch. The problem is that when I save and reload this, the tab stop is lost, so the paragraphs with no heading have a first line indent of only .5 inches. Interestingly, this does not occur if I set a 1.01 inch tab stop.

I can confirm this with OOo 1.1.0 on Win98: The black mark indicating the tabstop actually vanishes when, when in the ruler, it's placed exactly onto the grey mark that indicated the left border of the second line in a paragraph. I am not sure whether to treat this as a bug since this only appears to be a problem when one doesn't make correct use of the styles, which is the case here. For further details, tcfelker, please contact users@openoffice.org and refer to this Issue for the people there to be able to access your attachment. For a quick workaround, however, use hard return (Shift + Enter) to start a new paragraph without negative indent.
Summary changed back to original (for some reason the summary got modified while I was working on my last comment).
In a way, I disagree. An innocent error by a naive user will cause intense frustration. It should be as nearly bullet-proof as we can make it so that a new user can back out of a mistake.
I share your opinion, RBE. I just don't know whether this should be treated as a bug since OOo behaves perfectly well in replacing the tabstop with the right border when they conincide. Maybe this should turn into a enhancement request. But I'd rather leave this as a "new defect" for the developers to discuss.
HI->FME: Different behavior between 1.00" and 1.01" is really suspect.
.
Issue is comfirmed on Linux PC Open Office version 1.1.0 Steps: 1) open or create new text document 2) set heading to -1" first line 3) set handing body to 1" 4) set handing tab to 1" 5) type paragraph with 1" tab 6) save and close file 7) reopen file and tab changes to 0.5" After closer examination the paragraph have been remove from the specified heading style to another after opening the file again.
