Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 24261
Insert->Special Character... does not enable "Save" button
Last modified: 2019-07-14 09:44:05 UTC
While working with a presentation, inserting a using the Insert->Special Character... dialogue did not enable the "Save" button. The "Save" button was greyed out, I inserted a special character from the dialogue, and the "Save" button remained greyed out. This sounds similar to Issue 9331, but because it was a different operation, this sounds like it might be a larger issue than described in 9331.
Please give a detailed step by step description of what you are doing (which buttons, selecting etc.). Thanks for your help. Reassigned to Christian.
The Save button gets enabled when you leave the editmode of the textbox.
I am running Linux 2.4.22 Kernel with XFree 4.3.0 with KDE 3.1.3. I am using OpenOffice 1.1.0, and running in the Impress tool. This is 100% reproduceable for me (I tried a couple of times before generating the issue, and I just tried again today). I ran a few more tests today as well, and hopefully have some additional information. It works this way for me on both a newly opened presentation, and a presentation where I have just saved it (in both cases, the little "disk" icon on the tool bar at the top is greyed out). I select an insertion point (any text will do), generally at the end of a word (i.e. before a space), but I've just tested it in the middle of a word and it works the same. I go select the Insert->Special Character... menu item. The dialog comes up. I click on the character I want to insert, and the OK button in the dialog stops being grey. FYI, I have generally been selecting the "R in a circle" ("registered") character [character U+00AE (174)] in the "Bitstream Vera Serif" font. I press the OK button to insert the selected character, and the dialog closes. The new character has been inserted, but the little "disk" icon on the toolbar at the top is still greyed out. If I press the Page Down or Page Up key, the "disk" icon goes active (dark). Also FYI, I can insert as many special characters from that dialog (invoke the menu item/dialog repeatedly) as I like and it will not change the "disk" icon to indicate that a change needs to be saved... until inserting a character causes the line I'm inserting on to wrap, at which time the "disk" icon is updated (active/dark).
re: The Save button gets enabled when you leave the editmode of the textbox. When I type in a character from the keyboard (e.g. an "f"), the "disk" icon in the toolbar at the top immediately goes "active" to indicate that the document has changed and needs to be saved. I would expect the insertion of any character to behave the same way...
Same in 1.1.0 in linux. I didn't file an issue about this when I first encountered it several releases ago, but should have as it's quite irritating and frustration ("Why doesn't it activate the 'Save' item?").

The behaviour is inconsistent. We should change it. Please have a look.
The problem is reproducible in Linux 2.4.26 #1 SMP. If we work in the box, and insert special character, the save icon is still disable. It only turns on, if we click out of the edit box or we press on any key (except Del, Shift, Caps Lock, Ctrl, Alt and F# key)) on the keyboard even the left/right arrow, insert key. However, it works fine for regular characters or inserting other things (graphics, files, spreadsheet...) In addition, if we press Del key, the text after cursor will be deleted. However, the save icon is not enable until we exit the box or press any key. This issue also happens in Ooo1.1.3, Ooo1.1.4 on Windows 2000 SP3 and Window XP build 2600. I agree with the prority (P4) of the defect since inserting a special character is seldomly used. Also, there is a workaround solution, if saving the file is required by pressing/entering other keys/characters.
Reset assigne to the default "issues@openoffice.apache.org".
Still reproduce with AOO 4.1.6
