Description alanoneill 2004-01-29 15:13:38 UTC
I have been experiencing a problem with OpenOffice where the more it is used by
a given user, the slower it performs for that user. The slowness is not related
to the function selected (e.g., writer, calc, etc.), but I do use the writer the
most. For example, I use OpenOffice frequently under my personal account. Over
the months since I have installed OpenOffice, I have noticed that it takes
longer and longer both to start the program and to load, save, and print
documents. This morning I experimented by logging into a different account on
the same machine. I almost never use OpenOffice under this other account. When
I started OpenOffice, it came up very quickly (1-2 seconds). Next I loaded a
document, and it also took only a second or two. I then exited OpenOffice and
copied the document that I had just opened to my primary account. I logged back
into my primary account, started OpenOffice and loaded the document. OpenOffice
took a while to load (~20 seconds), and the document took 45 seconds to load.

I believe this problem may be similar to issue #23385.

Here are some details about my setup.

I am running Redhat Linux 9 with kernel version 2.4.20-28.9. To verify that I
am running the latest build of OpenOffice (1.1), yesterday I downloaded the
tarball from the OpenOffice.org site and compared it to the file that I have in
my library, which I used to install OpenOffice on my machine.

OpenOffice is installed in /usr/local/OpenOffice.org1.1.0 so that each of the
users on my system can run OpenOffice after they run the setup that places the
small number of files in their home directory (~/OpenOffice.org1.1.0).

Here are some details about my hardware setup:

Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2400+
Physical memory: 1 gig
Free hard disk space (primary drive): 73 gig

If more information would be helpful, I'm pretty good with Linux, so I should be
able to get whatever is needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's a duplicate of issue 20287
Please check whether your pspfontcache file is very large.
If this is the case you can either remove the file and recreate it read-only or
you can have it deleted on a regular basis as a workaround.
(see issue 20287 for more details)
Please comment whether this is the case.

Yes, that seems to have done the trick. To solve the problem for myself and
other users on my system, I placed the command

rm ~/OpenOffice.org1.1.0/user/psprint/pspfontcache

as the first command in the

/usr/local/OpenOffice.org1.1.0/program/soffice

script.

Will the issue with the pspfontcache file be resolved in a future release?

Thanks for your help!!!

The issue will be solved in the next release (see the target-milestone field of
issue 20287 for the version that the fix is meant to go in... (in this case OOo
1.1.1)

Thank you for confirming it duplicate. -> closing.
