Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 25977
empty cells or cells with text are handled like cells with a "0" when calculating
Last modified: 2004-03-26 17:22:30 UTC
OOo-spreadsheet-application does handle empty cells or cells with text like cells with a "0" when calculating! This is a very big problem! Please have a look at the example spreadsheet I have attached: "Hello" * "5" = "0" !!! or EMPTY * 5 = 0 !!! Excel does print an error in the result-cell if one of the cells it is calculatet of does not include a number! OOo should also do so! Please change this!!!

Hi, Prio is much to high, I corrected this. Also this is not a bug but could be seen as an enhancement request. So I changed the Issue type and re-assign it to Bettina. Frank
Please see this as user! I think I'm not the only one using Calc for complex calculations that are important. And if the fact that if there is a empty cell where the user has forgotten to enter a value that is included in the formula does not mark the result as not-calculateable can lead to very big irritations, believe me! Allow me to correct the priority.
"Hello" * 5 = 0 ... is not a bug!? Maybe you have learned other math-laws than I...
I think Text should be in general lead to an error when trying to calculate with it. But the handling of empty cells (if it leads to an error or is handled as "0") could be added as document option, where the user can decide for each document how to handle empty cells. How do you think about this?
Excel 2002 seems to handle empty cells now as "0", Gnumeric behaves same. I still think that a documen-toption to handle this would be the best solution. But both, Excel AND Gnumeric set the result invalid if a cell used in a formula contains text. OOo-Calc seems the only spreadsheet-program that does handle text as "0". So please think about to change this!
