Description rflorence 2004-02-29 13:13:30 UTC
The endnotes in OpenOffice writer lack two crucial features:

  - The numbering cannot be restarted by chapter unless the notes are at the end of the chapter. It is
normal in book manuscript preparation to have all of the endnotes at the end of the book, but to
renumber from 1 for each chapter.

  - There doesn't seem to be a way to insert headings into the endnote section. It is normal in book
manuscript preparation to insert a header indicating that the follow group of notes are for Chapter One,
etc.

The problem is platform independent (duh), not just Mac. It basically prevents
you from editing books in OOo (many publishers now request camera ready copies
in Word format, it would be nice if one could change that to OOo)

Since it is an enhancement request, I suggest that the endnote/footnote feature
could be changed so that the numbering in the text is independent of the
internal numbering (the reference in the xml).
Basically, I suggest an internal number, a text field to appear in text, and an
end-field to appear at the end. For "normal" endnotes, these 3 fields would be
identical, but it would allow more arcane uses including this endnote issue:

- numbering in text and at the end could contain custom counters, maybe even
some fields that can be restarted by page, section, chapter, or custom marker.
- numbering at the end could be different and add chapter number etc. (like 4
and VII-4)

It is absolutely critical to much of academic and writing to have the following:
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
all of which contain end-notes. Then at the end of the document:
Endnote heading that says Chapter 1
the consecutively ordered endnotes for the chapter, with notes themselves
starting at 1 (here and in document)
Endnote heading that says Chapter 2
the consecutively ordered endnotes for the chapter, with notes themselves
starting at 1 (here and in document)
Endnote heading that says Chapter 3
the consecutively ordered endnotes for the chapter, with notes themselves
starting at 1 (here and in document)

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".

I agree that this feature is really a must

Yes, come on people, vote on this one.

Really important if you want to write an academic book with OpenOffice !

This feature already exists.
Use one section for each chapter and set notes in properties as you want (end of text or section) and restart numbering.

For me, it's a workaround acceptable.
