Description firmail 2004-02-29 15:58:36 UTC
Hi,

Borders in Writer can't always be deleted. Sometimes, like in the attached
document there is just no way to delete them. In paragraph>borders> line
style=none doesn't work, nor does setting the border under Line arrangement
"user defined" nor does the Default with no border.

The border just goes one line up, or does other strange stuff. Sometimes there
appear lines in various parts of the document when the formating is changed.
But it all boils down to not being able to delete the border.

To reproduce: in the attached document try to delete the border below the
yellow marked paragraph. It will just jump one line up.

in the above document a border appears when any heading style is applied to a
paragraph. It too is not deletable and appears whenever any Heading in the
whole document is applied.

Your border is a hard formatting and therefore has priority over the style which
you choose in the stylist. Up to now for consecutive paragraphs with the same
border the border is not shown between those paragraphs. In your file not only
the yellow paragraph has a border but also the paragraphs before it. So you must
remove the border not only in the yellow paragraph but also in the other
paragraphs which has a border. The same problem can appear with simple
horizontal lines.

I see.

But now the problem becomes more confusing. There are now two problems:

1. In the original text where I copy-pasted these lines from. I did not
introduce borders in all previous lines. They suddenly surfaced after I inserted
a horizontal line. But maybe I inserted a line and then went on writing and the
border was invisibly carried along until at some strange moment the problem
appeared.

2. How do I delete them? They are invisible! In the example "border.sxw" only
one border appears (Line 4) there are no borders below (line > 4) but in every
line above (lines <=4). If I select line <= 4 and go to Paragraph>border then I
can indeed delete the visible and invisible borders, because in every line of
the selection there is a border (visible or not). However If I select all lines
(1-6) and then go to paragraph>border no border shows up. If I nevertheless
select: Line Arrangement: Set no border (the quick-box with no border) then
nothing happens (same when line style set to none). The borders on the lines <=4
do not disappear. In fact nothing happens only because the selection contains a
line with no border.

So what can I do? I cannot select the whole doc and remove all borders as there
are some paragraphs within that have no border and the problem described in 2.
appears. For the same reason I cannot select parts of the doc and there remove
all borders. The only solution is: to select a single paragraph and then go to
paragraph>border have a look if it contains an invisible border, deselect it and
do so for every line in my doc. This is not really workable.

As the document where this happened is not intended for publishing, I will live
with horizontal lines in my doc. But I guess it must be pretty ennerving if
strange borders appear in your doc and you are not able to delete them nor
understand how they appear...

In short that borders are invisible is IMHO a bug, or do I miss a point here?
What are they for?

Also that I cannot select to delete any border as done in 2. when a sinlge
paragraph in the selection has no border but all others have, is IMHO also a bug
or a missing feature. As in the spreadsheet program borders that exist in some
paragraphs but not others should appear shaded, and one should be able to
remove/change them for the whole selection.

To get rid of the borders all together, mark them and than use formatmenu or
contextmenu:
(1) choose "default", which will delete _all_ hard formatting
or
(2) choose "Paragaph" tab "Borders" and delete them. If you have catched in
addition a paragraph, which has no border, than first apply a new border to them
all and then directly with the same marking once more go to "Borders" and delete
them.

It is not really a bug, have a look on issue 17758 and issue 23118. You will
see, that some work is going on to improve the behavior of OOo.

Hi,

Thank you for the tips, it is a workaround and works for me.

I also had a look at 17758. That's the same problem I had it just surfaced
differently in my case. I want to say that this feature caused me a lot of
trouble and confused me no end - and I consider myself not a beginner of oo. It
is simply not transparent and whenever you make a line and then insert text
above then invisible lines appear in the text.

I do understand the concept and what this feature is meant to be, but I think it
doesn't achieve what it is supposed to do.

It is good to hear that the feature can be disabled in the next version of oo.

Thank you for your quick help. I was now able to remove the lines in my text.
