Place holder to develop and maintain OpenOffice.org marketing strategy.
Comment 1 erwin.tenhumberg 2004-04-23 12:09:42 UTC
I'd love to help with the definition of the OOo marketing strategy.
I see three major goals:

1.) Increase overall market share of OpenOffice.org and derivative
products (StarOffice, Ximian's OpenOffice.org, RedOffice), etc.

2.) Help to create an OpenOffice.org related revenue stream for
    contributing companies and individuals.

3.) Grow the community by recruiting more users, contributors and
developers and increasing their "loyalty" to the project.

More momentum could be created by getting quotes from larger
OpenOffice.org deployments and supporting ISVs and publishing them
in an "OpenOffice.org Momentum Press Release". It will be difficult
to get the official quotes, but I have the feeling that we could be
successful with it.

We could achieve goal 2.) by creating a solutions page that lists
what different companies are offering with respect to migration tools,
MS Exchange alternatives, thin clients, Linux desktops, support,
training, etc. This is related to the consultants list, but is not
exactly the same.

The list should not be limited to contributing entities, but people
and companies who are making significant contributions should be
rewarded with the top spots and logos.

With respect to 3.) I think we need more articles in the magazines,
etc. that talk about what you can do with OpenOffice.org. For example,
we need articles about API/SDK development in all major developer
magazines. We also should continue to work with schools and
universities to get them involved.

I have set up a forum to facilitate the development of our OpenOffice.org
Marketing Strategy, see:
http://marketing.openoffice.org/servlets/ForumMessageList?forumID=36

Only those people who are members of the Marketing Project will have received
notification of the forum automatically. I have sent a message to dev@marketing,
see: http://marketing.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=14886 to
notify those that are subscribers to dev@marketing, and not members of the MP.

Most importantly, I wished to stress that it was to be used for developing the
contents of the marketing strategy.

I think this issue has been overtaken by events. This task is now being
co-ordinated through the strategy@marketing.openoffice.org mailing list - see

The marketing strategy in draft form that is currently being discussed on the
[strategy] list is entitled "Strategic Marketing Plan 2010". This is a marketing
strategy for OpenOffice.org the PRODUCT.

This issue was raised for a marketing strategy for the MP whose mission is to
market both the product and the community.

I'm happy to leave this issue closed and link an item in the ToDo list to
http://marketing.openoffice.org/strategy/ and the [strategy] list, because the
strategic marketing plans ought to be living documents.

However, any strategy needs to be agreed to and revisions set for a
pre-determined period otherwise it makes any planning or implementation just a
little awkward :)
