Description dmarks 2004-04-02 16:00:53 UTC
In the drawing app for a freeform curve, there is the ability to draw a
"Freeform Line" and the ability to draw a "Curve." The "Curve" command appears
to work by clicking on a new point and then dragging a new section of the curve
away from the line connecting the previous point and the new point. This is a
bit weird to me, and I have problems using it over the older Powerpoint-type
curve drawing. In the Microsoft-type scheme, one clicks on a bunch of points
and then it interpolates usually a pretty reasonable curve through them. The
"Freeform Line" command works kind of like this, except one must draw the curve
by holding the mouse button down, so one can not individually specify the points
the curve must go through.

1. What I'd ideally like is a curve drawing function where one could
successively click on points and then have it interpolate a line between them,
kind of like the "Polygon" line-draw but then it would draw a "softer"
bezier-type curve through the points to form a "Freeform Line".

2. Another nice feature would then be to make it so when one did "Edit points"
then it would allow one to insert new points into the curve or remove them (this
could be added to the Polygon features too perhaps). Perhaps there is already a
way to do this, but I could not figure it out by looking at the menus or using
any combination of Alt/Ctrl/Shift with the mouse clicks. If not, perhaps by
shift-clicking or alt-clicking on the curve at a point where one would want
add/remove a point on the curve would be a good way to implement it.

3. Finally, it is possible to introduce "kinks" into curves by accidentally
adjusting the tangent lines to the curve. Maybe some kind of "lock" could be
activated (perhaps by default) so that one could not accidentally introduce
discontinuities into the derivative/slope of the curve so it would remain smoother.

Anyways, the drawing app is fantastic. I think if these features were added it
could be quite superior to the Microsoft-type bezier curves. Thanks!
