Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 27404
Compress executable files and increase startup speed of OOo
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:31:33 UTC
I came across this at: http://theopencd.sunsite.dk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3299 This issue applies to all future releases(?) in windows (and possibly other opperating systems, but I havent tested other OSes) If you use UPX (http://upx.sourceforge.net/) to compress the exacutables (.exe and .dll) in the Openoffice.org directory, it appears to half! yes half the foldr size AND INCREASE startup speed of OOo. All I did was to compress everything (*.*) in the program folder on best compression. UPX then worked out what files could be compressed succesfully, without corruption and did so. This reduced the 'program' folder from 102mb to approx 53mb. A big drop. Also, for some reason, I could now start OOo faster, speed of startup being one of the current big drawbacks of OOo. I hope that I have reported this correctly, and to the right person/component. Alex
Please have a look at http://cs.openoffice.org/data/UPX.pdf where we analyzed UPX with OOo.
Thanks, but "Thus we recommend to use UPX builds only where disk space is tight and we will provide UPX build for each final version" When is this intended to be introduced?
This wass applied for Czech builds only in the past. But due to little interest, we stopped providing UPX builds.
I am enquiring on behalf of TheOpenCD, who include OOo, and help to raise awareness of the project/help distribute. Please see http://theopencd.sunsite.dk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3329 and make your comment. If it would be a good thing to do or not... Thanks for your patience. Alex

Well, bh, Its seems to be up to you whether we go ahead with a special re-packaging for the OpenCD, especially as the new 2.0 code line uses the msi installer system so is harder to unpack and re-create when UPXed. have fun, Alex
To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".
