Description aambrose 2004-04-22 21:47:46 UTC
I will attach a file that demonstrates this issue.

When there is an image that is in the range of rows that are grouped, that image
will expand out to the full height of all the rows when the outline group is
expanded.

Let me add some steps you may follow with the attached file:

1. Note the size of the graphic over cell B2 - it roughly fits within that cell.
2. Collapse the outline group that covers rows 2-6 by clicking the '-' in the
outline area to the left of the spreadsheet.
3. Click the '+' to expand the outline group again.

Note how the graphic has now expanded in size so that it encompasses rows 2-6.

Hi Adam,

to workaround this defect, just select the graphical object, open the context
menu and select Position&Size. Now tag the Protect checkboxes and close the
dialog. The object will not change it's size anymore.

Hi Niklas,

talked with Falko about this Issue and we agrred that this is a bug and we
should not chnage the size of an object after unhiding cells between the
starting and ending point of an graphic.

Set to later but would be fine to have it in 2.0

Frank,

Yes, that does fix the problem in that file. Thanks!

However & unfortunately, this case was created as a simple case that was meant
to demonstrate a problem I have with importing an Excel file that is used by the
rest of my coworkers. So, I don't know if there is another problem related to
importing xls files, or some other related bug at play here.

This Excel file has *many* of these graphics inside of outline groups, and they
all exhibit this stretching behavior when I import the file into OO & expand the
outline groups. The saved version of the file has all outline groups collapsed.

What's strange is that I cannot select the graphics in this document (either
when the outline groups are expanded or collapsed), so I cannot use the
workaround suggested. And since the outline groups are collapsed to begin with,
this also presents a problem with selecting the graphics.

I'll see if I can come up with a same xls file with non-proprietary info in it
that demonstrates this bug.

If you feel I should enter a separate bug on this xls file issue, please let me
know.

A minor update: I couldn't select the images because the file was read-only.
Once I did a Save-As to sxc format, I was able to select the images.

However, there are still several problems:

- The outline groups are collapsed, so if I was to protect the size & place of
the images, then they remain in their squashed state when the outline groups are
expanded. This is the blocker of this issue. The only workaround is to ask
the person saving the file to save the file with all groups expanded, but the
file is quite large (in terms of # rows/cols & outline groups), and most people
on the team would object to this. Plus, I know what I'd hear if I aksed that
they need to do this, just so I can read it on my Linux box: "See? This is why
you have to use Windows & Office, you hippie freak!" :)

The following are just big annoyances:

- There are a *lot* of images, so it takes far too long for me to select each one.
- There are images stacked on top of one another (mostly due to the collapsed
group, but also because there are some "dialog box" images that are composites
of images. I was using "Send to back" so that I could get at the underlying
images, but it was too much work.

Anyways, thank you for the feedback. And thanks for a really great open source
product!

Excel document that shows this bug & problem with workaround
Comment 7 frank 2004-04-26 07:23:53 UTC
Hi Adam,

your problem regarding the selection of the Graphics: Have you used the
Navigator (F5) ? This powerfull feature let's you select objects by just
doubleclicking on it's reference.

Regarding the XLS Import: No a new Issue isn't needed, as the import itself is
not accountable for this behaviour.

About the timeframe: Niklas tries to fix it for OOo2.0 but there is a lot of
work to do for this version so it might not get into it.

Best regards

Frank

This also happens with checkboxes inside an outline group. They get stretched
and, therefore, change their apparent position.

In the to-be-attached demo I have such protected graphics, and the effect
persists regardless

I think that I should set keyword "ms_interoperability" for this issue.
