A surface chart should have a contour mode, in the style of gnuplot. There are two variants. In one, gnuplot will just show the contours (and no surface). In the second, gnuplot can show a 3d view of the surface, plus a contour plot below. See the attached file (with two plots imported from gnumeric).

With the new chart module having appeared in ooo2.3 (great improvement by the way) when might we see the addition of the surface plots?
Is anyone working on this or should I find a different program?
I am sending more people to use Excel because of this issue than all of the others put together. Any progress to report?

@weiz, please start the implementation of the surface chart as discussed in IRC. :-) The string defined for that chart type in the ODF fileformat is 'surface'. I think we will need at least 4 subtypes: 2D (contour) with colored areas 2D (contour) with lines only 3D (surface) with colored areas 3D (surface) with lines only And we will need an additional list of fill and line-styles for the different sections of the surface chart (which are created by the y-axis scale). Please add such a list to the diagram model. I will take over for loading and saving that additional data later. As this is not available in ODF 1.2 we will need a fileformat change which will take some time.

I have come up with a partial solution for contour maps by changing the background color of each cell in a 32x32 cell array to one of 32 colors, based on a spectrum - the MIN of the table gets a violet, the MAX gets a red, and other colors are assigned based on the value of the target cell and the the range from MIN to MAX. This is accomplished mainly using the STYLE and CHOOSE functions. http://robot_guy.blogspot.ca/2012/10/a-contour-map-for-open-office-calc.html
Thanks to spider boris for a low-resolution workaround. Back in 2009 it looked like something was going to be done towards a real solution for this. Guess that just went away. There is still a strong need though.
