Description iantravis 2004-05-24 11:12:52 UTC
This issue also occurred in 1.0.3 and 1.1 beta. It may occur on Windows, can't check that,
sorry. It may affect other languages that I don't use. Description follows:

When composing German language text, the Autocorrect function performs the following
changes:

die -> Dienstag
mit -> Mittwoch

This is highly destructive for German language texts, as both "die" and "mit" occur far more
often than the weekdays. Disabling Autocorrect is not an option. I can't find a way to
prevent Autocorrect from recognizing these words as weekdays. This seems to be an issue
of developers assuming that an English language feature will localize 1:1, where it actually
needs some more thought.

please explain what is wrong here.
If you don't want that die and mit will be expanded to Dienstag or Mittwoch,
just don't press <return>. I cannot tell what is wrong here.

Thanks for looking, but not pressing Enter is not a solution. Open
"Options/AutotextAutoformat", click the "Word Completion" tab, select "Space" for "Accept
with", and tell me if your solution still works! This is not a concocted niggle; it simply
reflects the quickest way of using "Word Completion". Please do not suggest not pressing
Space! As "die" and "mit" are two of the most common words in the German language, this
is an extremely annoying issue. My current workaround is to use Word Completion to
change "Dienstag" and "Mittwoch" back to "die" and "mit". Hardly state-of-the-art. All it would
take would be removing the weekdays from wherever they are hidden and demoting them to
mere mortal entries in the Word completion dictionary.

reassigning to wordprocessor...
Comment 4 michael.ruess 2004-07-06 13:18:24 UTC
reassigned to SBA.

SBA: This "hidden AutoComplete feature" (Works as designed, => type changed to
"Enhancement") can inded be regarded as a hinderance especially in German, as
"die and "mit" are quite often used in Geman language.

The workaround to disable AutoCompletion completely is a "poor" one.

On the other hand, accidently hitting <Enter> should not occur too often as
these words are normally NOT at the end of a sentence/list.

Note: This applies for months names too.

Some "quick" proposals:
(1) Simply remove this "hidden feauture"
(2) Create (...another...) option for AutoCorrect, perhaps seperately for Writer
and Calc.

Reassigned to BH.

Just installed OOo 608 and can confirm that the issue is still alive and
kicking!

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
