Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 31190
Simplify Memory Options
Last modified: 2022-11-19 10:43:08 UTC
Lifted from dev@ui Tools->Options->OpenOffice.org->Memory->Grapics cache Tools->Options->OpenOffice.org->Memory->Cache for inserted objects ------------------------------------------------------------------ Is IMHO plainly not suited to be presented to end-users in this form. To make matters worse, the online help is not helpful at all, basically just repeating the dialog labelling. To me this strongly suggests that the documenter had no idea either what that means (understandably!). Ideally I think this just should be set to some sane default and forgotten. If that is not possible, I think *one* slider might be the best situation, supplying somensible "linear combination" of the more detailled settings. |-------------------|^|------------| less memory faster display consumption of images also a "Details" button might be a further possibility if there is *really* a need for this (I don't think so). The online help should explain what this means and what sensible settings for e.g. a low-end machine (PII 300, 128MB RAM) and a high-end machine are. Note that this dialog alone is frequently brought up as an example of OpenOffice's lack of usability, see e.g. http://www.kirkmcpike.com/column/page3.html so this is actually a marketing problem too, IMHO. (see also http://ui.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=481 where Oliver Specht says "I aggree here, too. A simple more/less memory consumption setting should be sufficient.") TIA /ralph

This seems a trivial item to fix - just have a slider with a few math formulae attached. Perhaps a 'advanced' command button for the daring! It is items like this one - ease of use - that often put microsoft ahead...
best solution is to entirely remove this option and get rid of the UI clutter.
Including herein for reference: issue 75496 The suggestion given there is to manipulate memory option.
