Description johnpettigrew 2004-08-17 10:15:48 UTC
When "Show nonprinting characters" is active, OOo shows most spaces in a
document. However, it fails to show the trailing spaces on lines within flowed
text in a paragraph. This makes it very hard both to see how the text is really
formatted (the whole reason for providing the "Show nonprinting characters"
option) and to edit that text (placing the cursor is not as obvious as it should
be because there is an undisplayed character).

Especially in view of the fact that Writer breaks lines in flowed text at
characters other than spaces (such as hyphens and commas), this should be
corrected because it means that it is not obvious visually (despite having this
option activated) whether there is a space between such a breaking character and
the beginning of the following line. Indeed, I assume that it must have been
coded this way deliberately (for cosmetic reasons, I imagine) because such
spaces are treated specially; this is, in my opinion, a mistake and this
"feature" should be provided only as an option, if it is provided at all,
because it renders Writer much less usable for technical work (I'm a
professional copyeditor, which is why the issue bothers me).

Similarly, trailing hyphens are not treated correctly WRT the cursor - if I
click with the mouse to the right of a line of text within a paragraph, the
cursor is placed after the last letter, comma or full stop in the text, but
before the space (presumably because the display of spaces is suppressed).
However, the cursor is also placed before any trailing hyphen, which is very
non-obvious. If I click beyond the end of a line, I would expect the cursor to
be placed at the extreme end of the line, *after* any characters, even hyphens.

WRT the above comments about spaces, I would appreciate the two issues being
considered together, because (if spaces are being displayed), the cursor should
be placed after the trailing space if the click is to the right of the text.

The part "spaces not shown at end of a line" is duplicate to issue 20878.
Comment 2 lohmaier 2004-08-17 22:06:27 UTC
one problem, one issue.
duplicate.

for the remaining proble, please file seperate issues. /Display/ of characters
is different from caret /placement/.
