Description hflees 2004-09-09 02:21:48 UTC
Hi,

Yesterday, my wife asked me how to insert formula into Writer. I told her go to
Insert -> Object -> Formula. She complained when she entered delta (change
triangle symbol) she got %DELTA. I have not tried formula, so I tried. Indeed
there are few things that can be improved.

(1) Make the formula interface more intuitive. A good example is the popular
text editor. WYSIWYG formula editing. I think it is not a good idea to ask
people to type formula (command) of a formula. Perhaps the formula of the
formula can be enabled (for advanced user) and disabled for novice user.

(2) Appropriate naming, i.e. Selection and Catalog. Perhaps change “Selection†
to “Formula†and “Catalog†to “Symbolâ€.

(3) “Tools -> Catalog/Symbol†and “View -> Selection/Formula†should be merged,
either under View or Tools

(4) Make Selection/Formula and Catalog/Symbol toolbox dockable like other
toolbar.

Thanks for making this software great.

unfortunately, collective issues can not be handled properly.
Please file seperate issues for each of your suggestions.
http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/basic_rules.html#one_per_issue

All of your points are valid issues on their own, but unfortunately not in one
single issue. I have to close this one as invalid and have to ask you to file
seperate issues.

Thanks for your comprehension and for supporting OOo!

(reagrding point 1 I have some doubt that this is possible at all. You can enter
simple formulas "as is" , e.g. enter "a + b = c" and you're done. (you can enter
this as regular text, select it and then choose insert Formula, it will be then
converted to a formula object) but when the formula gets more complicated some
kind of abstraction ("command language") is necessary. How would you enter
"square root" without using the commands?)
