Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 34081
Cannot Input Chinese Characters
Last modified: 2005-03-10 16:44:50 UTC
Hello there, I am a Window user exploring to migrate to OS - due to cost issues. However, after downloading OOo 1.1.2 Chinese Simplified version, I cannot input chinese characters. Please advise what should I do in order to be able to input chinese characters. I was previously using Chinese Star 2.97 and to input chinese characters, I press the Ctrl button. Doesn't seem to be help. My configuration: 1) Win98 SE 2) OOo 1.1.2 3) Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2 (full installation - supporting other languages) Please help. Tks. C.A.
OOo doesn't provide an IME. AFAIK only the chinese version of windows 98 provides an IME for chinese, english Windows needs a speterate IME So please: Name the language version of windows you are using. Name the IME you are using. (or is Chinese Star the IME?) If chinese star is the IME, is it unicode-capable? I guess you will find support easier on one of the mailing-lists of the chinese native-language project: http://zh.openoffice.org/ You may try a developer snapshot as well, IIRC there has been some work to support more IMEs.
Dear Cloph, My apologies. 1) I am using Win98 SE English edition. 2) I am no longer using Chinese Star as I have lost the installation CD. Thus I am seeking an alternative to Chinese Star - preferably something that is OS. My problem is that I cannot input chinese characters, thus I am unable to seek for support on the chinese native language project. Pardon me - what is a developer snapshot and IIRC?
Hi cangoh. Give NJStar a try (www.njstar.com). I've used it before I move to WinXP. It's pretty good Chinese input client. There is a 30 days trial. But you can actually use it for more than 30 days since they'll probably just ban a few minor functions. Of course, you should buy it if you like the product. Please give another post here to indicate if you can input well into OOo using njstar. Thanks.
Also, please make sure you've set your font to a Chinese font. If you use some non-Chinese fonts, your words on Ooo may not display simply because your font doesn't have the Chinese word's information.
Dear pplwong, Tried using NJStar on Win98 and MS Office 2000 - haven't tried it on OOo. Was wondering what do the companies in China use? I heard that they have developed linux in Mandarin Simplified - didn't they contribute to OOo? I am seeking an OS IME.
MRU->US: please care about this.
You can use various IMEs on linux. OpenOffice.org itself doesn't provide one. This is the job of the operating system / seperate programs. Just imagine every program would come with a different IME - you'd have to learn to use every single IME (different keycombos, different set of features...) - Bad idea. If "OS IME" means "open source IME", then you probably have to switch to linux. (I would recommend using linux if you don't have any special purpose programs requireing windows - for most windows program "wine" does a good job).
I just managed to repeat this... OS: Win XP OOo: 1.1.3 Word processor MS Pinyin IME Results: Chinese characters entered using the IME appear as squares (escape characters) instead of actual characters. It is independent of the font I use; even after changing to a B5 / GB font I can still only enter escape characters.
I have seen that this issue is OOo-1.1.2 related and that the last entry was in November. Have you tried a newer version of OOo like 1.1.3f or some 1.9.xx builds? Does this error occur there too? Or could this issue be closed?
It looks like this is an issue where the user was unable to enter certain characters using OOo, but that that was functionality provided by another program outside of OOo. If this is not the case, and there is new information related to this issue, it can be reopened. For now, I am resolving invalid.
@ spylee: escape chars on WinXP are a problem of not capable fonts and thus a different issue. Closing Resolved Invalid issue.
