Description brunodu 2004-09-16 11:19:20 UTC
Hi,

I have a big master document.
I want (need) to export it in a sxw document, so that I can edit it.

I do File/export then I choose a sxw document.
It seems to work but, the sxw document behaves as a master document, not as a
normal document:
-It asks for the links activation
 -It is write protected
-It shows the name of the original writer document in the bottom right.
-If I change the original writer document's path and actualize evrery things,
my documents gets empty.

But the document swx gets the proper size (the size it would have if the export
had worked). It must remain a flag, or something, making OOo belives this is a
master document.

This happens on Win2000 and GNU/Linux-Debian (debian testing OOo package).

An OOo master document is more or less nothing else than a normal document with
protected sections linked with sub documents.

The export to sxw consistenly saves the global document content (else it would
be a data loss): linked and protected section.

But what you want to achieve doing an export is to *merge* the global document
into a normal document.

Conclusion: the current export to sxw is technically ok but useless and far awy
from the user's needs. We have to rethink this and that's why I transform this
DEFECT into an ENHANCEMENT.

in the meantime, there's a workaround:
- in the Navigator. toggle from global document view to the normal view (the
icon in the upper left corner of the Navigator)
- go to the category "Sections"
- right click on a section and choose "Edit"
- In the Section, select all sections shown in the list
- click on [Remove]
- close the dialog

All section are gone and the content is saved in the current document.
Now you can export to sxw.

->BH: as mentioned above, we need to improve the merge of master document into
one normal document.

Some issues in this area (already discussed with FL):
- File - Export - to oot (sxw): produces a master-document-like oot (sxw), not a
merged document
- Save as: does not offer the oot (sxw) format.
- for intuitivity reasons we may add an entry "Merge master document" (or
similar) in the "File - Send" menu.
- Usability/interoperability: MS Word has a own toolbar to insert, create,
delete merge sub documents

Your right, I want to merge the document.
The work around is working fine, thanks.

First off, is there any progress on this enhancement?

Second, I was using the workaround proposed, but I am not sure what to do after
I remove the sections to Save As... a .odt file.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I just started a new issue http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=77620
today.
Later I was informed at the forum about the existance of this issue.
Both issues look similar although not completely.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
