Description scenturion 2004-10-05 14:07:00 UTC
System:

windows 2000 professional
OO.org 1.1.3 (did a fresh install this morning)
J2SDK 1.4.2_03

bug:

The quotation marks, "", do not display properly in courier font in Writer. They
do work in Calc, though.

Steps to reproduce bug:
1. open openoffice.org.
2. click File -> new -> Text Document.
3. Loading a text document loads the default toolbars at the top of the window.
One has a drop-down menu with "Times New Roman" in it. Click on this drop-down
menu and change "Times New Roman" to "Courier".
4. Click in the text area and type a few quotation marks. They will appear as
dot characters. Like this --> .

Interestingly enough, if you do the same thing in Calc, the quotes work just fine.

I will attach a few screenshots so you can see what I mean.

Sorry about the butt ugly coloring in the bmps. :)

I reduced the resolution to 256 colors so they're smaller.

MRU->US: pls have a look.
Comment 7 ulf.stroehler 2004-10-06 11:05:18 UTC
us->hdu: any ideas?
Comment 8 hdu@apache.org 2004-10-06 12:07:32 UTC
Writer's autocorrection changes the "normal quotation marks" to typographical
quotation marks U+201X and the Courier font available on this system doesn't
support these unicodes. Courier is one of the few surviving bitmap fonts on the
Win32 platform and since we don't have access to the font file we cannot
calculate the unicode coverage it provides. So when typgographical quote is
requested that is not supported by the font we don't know that the glyph
fallback feature could be triggered.

HDU->submitter: as a quick workaround I suggest to change Courier to Courier New
or to disable the "typographical quote autocorrection" in the "Custom Quotes"
tabpage in the Tools->AutoCorrection dialog...

It would probably be a good idea to no longer support these ancient bitmap fonts
on the Win32 platform...

US->US: need to clarify with UserEx whether we could abandon win bitmap fonts.
Comment 10 ulf.stroehler 2005-05-30 12:01:35 UTC
US->FT: can we abandon/ignore Bitmap fonts on Windows platforms for the future?
Comment 11 falko.tesch 2005-10-20 15:58:08 UTC
FT: Targeted, priorised and re-assigned to default feature request owner.
