Description wind.li 2004-10-11 04:59:42 UTC
We had better add a driver info column to the Tools/Options/StarOffice
Database/Database registered database table
Comment 1 Frank Schönheit 2004-10-11 10:27:12 UTC
What info, and why?
Comment 2 wind.li 2004-10-12 03:56:01 UTC
I think at least we should show the driver's name. It should be better if we
show driver file and the file name for file base databases.
At least for me I don't want to open all database to find out what is what.
Comment 3 Frank Schönheit 2004-10-12 07:54:39 UTC
Hmm, so you mean we should give the user more information about the registered
file ... sounds like a good idea to me. However, I would not use the Driver
name, but the database type - the one which is also shown in the status bar of
the database window (e.g. "dBase" or "MS Access" or so). Additional information
may also be desirable, such as the path/file/host/port/whatsoever.

However, putting this into the columnar layout may be difficult. I'd suggest a
"more info" button or something like this, which gives the user information
about the currently selected registered database.

Howver, opening the database file to gather the information migh be slightly
expensive. Perhaps we should use the DocumentInformation which can be assiciated
with documents, and which can be stored in an uncompressed sub stream of the zip
package. Retrieving such information is cheap by definition.
(for an example, look at our Windows system integration: In the explorer, you
can display columns for the Auhor of a document, and similar information. This
is DocumentInformation which can be obtained from the file without completely
loading it. Something similar would be desirable for our document's information).

All in all, I don't think this is something which can be fixed with a few lines.
So I'd suggest to postpone this to OOo Later for the moment - it at least
involves UI changes, and the deadline for those (and for translation) has
already passed. In the current state, we should only introduce new UI whe it's
really necessary.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
